I hear all the arguments that we are essentially a counter-attacking team, but then what is the motive behind employing such as FDB?

Isn't that like asking Placido Domingo to sing the Birdie Song?

Welcome to the most ruthless League in the world Frank!

It's not the most 'ruthless' league in the world. It seems that way to those that don't watch football in any other countries and simply believe what the UK media spout week in week out about what an amazing league the PL is. Today's game was poor from both teams, one trying and learning a new way to play and another acting like thugs which the referee failed to control on numerous occasions. The Liverpool game just demonstrated 2 teams with appalling defenses, nothing 'ruthless' at all.

haha, one game in and the idiots come out of the woodwork wanting instant glory. FDB has changed the system drastically, what do you expect, perfect play from game 1? It'll take 7 or 8 games for the players to mature into their new roles. Better you go and support Chelsea, oh look they were 0-3 down to Burnley and had 2 players sent off and now they've also lost at home. Looks like Chelsea are going down with us then

It is just one game. But it looks like we have gone back to the Pardew experiment that failed (after a decent try) rather than sticking to the style of Pulis or BFS that worked.

If we play like that for 8 games we are in trouble. There is no disguising it, it was woeful. Chelsea only had 8 men so that is a freak result.

Lets hope its a lesson learned and not spurned today.

Exactly - that's why it's ruthless. if you don't get your homework right then you are punished from day one.
I made no mention of it being "upped" by the media - I've followed European Football since the sixties !

Yep, that's football and it will happen again, to many teams. Look at Chelsea today, lost at home to Burnley and get 2 players banned for up to 3 games.

However, what's really 'embarrassing' are the screaming children on here complaining that they didn't get their toy of choice today - a home win on day one of the season.

It's not screaming children it's seasoned fans that have seen this over and over again. Agree why get in fdb and try and change a system when we haven't got the players and don't intend spending the money for such players.

Having said that fdb may have studied us under Big Sam and Pulis and will understand what works for us at the moment.

Relegation will kill this club absolutely and completely. We haven't got time to play around 40 points then play all you like.

Isn't it the point that anybody can be anyone on their day that makes it ruthless? Or is that statement wrong?!

Agree with EuroPalace.

Let's see where Palace and Huddersfield are in the table come May.

We will finish above them.

It's been said the problem is we simply don't have the players to play 343. They look lost and their goals scored were all soft goals. I hope FDB isn't so pig headed that he won't revert to a plan B!!! At half time today he should have gone to a back 4. Loftus Cheek played well. Townsend made a difference when he came on. Not sure why Luka went off.
You can see that Hennessy's confidence is absolutely shot and ward was shocking.
We either need to buy the players who can play in this system, have a plan B or play with the team we have and 4 at the back!!!!

The club and players need support when they are under pressure from factors such as a new playing tactic or when a new manager arrives. What they received today was the complete opposite, so yes spoiled children who don't understand the first thing about support or when it's required. Seasoned 'fans'? Then that makes it even more embarrassing as they should know better if they've truly followed the club for so long, absolutely no excuse.
