Dear all, I have just seen the documentary made by Gareth Thomas, it was on BBC Wales tonight, and will be on the 6th of August 2017 on BBC TWO Can I please urge all Crystal Palace fans to watch this. As a gay man, I am proud to support Crystal Palace, but on the programme this site was shown and at least 5 abusive messages. The language and content was disgusting and must be removed Can the mods please ensure that all abusive messages on this site are deleted and that these members are banned. This forum needs to demonstrate this is not tolerated. Thanks for posting and I'll make sure to catch the programme. There is a general homophobia in football that needs addressing. Having our own proud lgbt society helps us I think. Parrot

I have to admit, I didn't see that specific comment you talked about but it does sound bad. I haven't seen the documentary but I assume the BBC did clarify that about three people made offensive comments and that's out of how many users there are of this forum? Actually I have just realised I know none of the following things: I really ought to watch the documentary because I reckon the BBC will have answered those questions as best they can because I've never known them to air any sensationalised sloppy journalism before. Currently, 23,292 of which, if you estimate only about one third are regular and active, you would be looking at 5 homophobic posts from something like 7,000 members - hardly an overwhelming majority and probably less than the percentage of true homophobes in the 'real' world. N.B. this average does not make the comments any the less acceptable.

Yup, damned foreigners bringing in their un-British views. When will people learn that Australian culture automatically implies sexism and homophobia. (Clearly making fun of some of our other Islamophobic friends, don't take me seriously). I still say Gareth should be ashamed of himself. The effect could well be that we block anyone from saying daft things. If we do that we don't get the chance to debate and, on rare occasions, change viewpoints. And that is where it becomes the Thought Police. A balanced programme would have made it clear it is a matter of much debate and a very small but vocal minority still espouse views from the 1950s. However, the majority has made its voice heard on this site as in life more generally and is very tolerant. Pitting people against each other is never going to allow for progress and is just counter-productive. One of the reasons I debate on this site is because so many individuals infuriate me. Their views are diametrically opposed to mine. Yet in the end I find common ground and camaraderie. And maybe once in a while I score a point and make someone think.

I actually watched the programme and there was very little on it about us, to be honest. The FA and the Premier League came out far worse than us in Thomas's eyes, as did the PFA and Gordon Taylor's sidekick. At least we gave hm a response (although he called the posters cowards for not turning up at the pub meeting that he offered everyone on here (apparently), although I don't remember that happening in a public way. The head of the Premier League didn't take or return a call from him over 16 weeks. Personally, I think it was a pointless programme, but I actually got offended myself when Justin Fashanu's niece, who made a similar programme 5 years ago, said that supporters of sports such as rugby and badminton (yes, I swear she said badminton), didn't resort to homophobic chants because they were "more intelligent" than football supporters. In fact, I think I may do a programme about the demonisation of football fans by those who aren't one. Yes, we were invited to attend a meeting or go to the pub with the man. Personally I was tempted but I thought the chances were I would be misquoted and stitched up. That was the general view, especially after the Ron Noades experience with Garth Crooks OBE.

So true - I think the vast majority really would not give a damn if a player was gay , green or an alien, as long as they could kick the ball, score or contribute to the team winning. If you specifically start a thread on a particular topic people will join in, and being Hol some of them will engage in serious debate, some will joke and some probably take a particular stance just to stimulate the discussion - that's life and people for you!

In the playground, things like "oy you gay" were just regular comments, just like "oy you bellend". They could be said in a banter-ish way or with more aggression. And if someone were gay, I don't think they would have had any sort of comment thrown at them No racist comments though.

What he failed to say was that he was the one making into a thing, I see gay jokes on this site fairly regularly, personally I don't find most gay jokes funny, often low wit people resort to those jokes. Had GT just gone through the site as all of us do, or even just posted his topic in general or football I think he would have found less abuse. I think his experience of the site does not match up with true life.

No, I didn't read the whole thread, but I did read some disturbing comments. Some of the posters sound like they need help..... Its a shame its been deleted, though I appreciate the reasoning for it. That way yourself and others commenting on the media 'rustling' about it would understand the context far better and realise it really wasnt anything like as bad as its being made out to be....as i said elsewhere it's all about context but when media (esp Social media and t***ter) get involved all sorts of reasoning goes out of the window unfortunately. Still, I think by reading this thread alone you'll get that jist anyhoo...OOoooo Berlin...great place Enjoy
