I think its certainly cross a line to call for a Final Solution. As for her views, and those who oppose her views, I don't have a problem with that. Speech isn't free of consequence or protest, and nor should it be. Its part of how democratic process seems to work, groups of people on each side attack and try to shut down political discourse - Its kind of how the game is played. I find you arguing this position amazing. I give up....which according to that post you are quite content about.

I seriously don't like the way this country is going on freedom of speech.

Sorry Jamie but I find it hard to reconcile you criticizing some of the insensitive views Hopkins has when you type that out. Jade Goodie dying was a tragedy for her children and it's just not a thing to celebrate when any young life is cut short like that. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. People dying, is just every day life.

Paul Condon, one-time Commissioner of the Met, was rounded on by the usual suspects some years ago for stating that the majority of street crime in London was committed by young, black men. And he, of all people, would have been in a unique position to know. Did the crime rate and race population correlate? Can't remember.

Now I'd rather the world was reasonable, and people engaged in actual debate and defended their statements made in public. But its not. The reality is that all sides engage in a process of 'attacking speech' made by others, rather than engaging in understanding the topic from both perspectives and seeing what can be found. This is what free speech is in the UK, different groups trying to shout louder than other groups, and trying to prevent the other voices being heard. I may have come across somewhat more defensive of this than I intended. I think it just sums up society.

And he, of all people, would have been in a unique position to know. And equally wrong to attack him for it. It in no way was a statement about race, but of one of the symptoms of crime. The cries of racist, drowned out that society has a problem that it needs to resolve. I don't for a minute think that Condon believed that crime was racially motivated or somehow genetically tied to being black.

Of course, the met doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to issues of race in London either, but that's besides the point - There is an issue there that needed social investigation (not necessarily by the met). Of course it doesn't justify racial profiling in stop and search by the police either (as some people immediately claimed - which of course artificially inflates race stats in crime).

Outside of a person's safety then an opinion deserves its place as a piece of individual liberty. That is independent of whether I agree with them or not. A free society should be protected but I notice that this freedom is far less protected than before.
