Erosion began in the 80's and the Thatcherite 'me,me,me' and the "no such thing as society..." culture which infects us still to this very day.

Yep. That's another 400 on top of the millions of so called refugees/immigrants that have either legally or illegally arrived here in the last decade. We're full up. Our infrastructure can't cope. Let some other mugs foot the bill. By so called, you mean the ones legally granted refugee status, by the UK legal system, in accordance with UN regulations. Some friends of mine worked asylum cases, its hard to be granted status. Usually less than 28,000 people a year get that status, compared to the 125,000 or so naturalised citizens who leave the UK permanently.

Curious as to how people like to point out humanitarian things that the UK should be doing for its own citizens, only when it comes as an argument for not doing something else.

What about those rich Middle East countries? I don't hear you complaining about their lack of charity. Not as much fun to bash them though is it. How many Syrian refugees have Saudi Arabia taken in? I think you'll be surprised.

Although it does seem contradictory, to protect people fleeing from tyranny and oppressive regimes, by placing them in tyrannical and oppressive regimes. We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell] |

A strange comment, Jamie. I don't recall ever having made the comparison before. I'm merely suggesting that there are certain priorities.
