Well I would respond, but the powers that be have decided to yellow carded me. This is basically a license for those inclined to abuse me with any accusations they please and I cannot respond in kind. Given that, I have decided not to bother posting. It's not a level playing field when you can get called a racist for having an opinion on immigration, with no punishment for the abuser, and get yellow carded for retaliation. I am not calling you a racist. We can disagree about immigration with out me calling you or for you to be a racist.

Ban smokers and junk food addicts from accessing the NHS. Problem solved. On one level, you're right. On another level though, these people are paying lots of duty to HMRC through their lifestyle choices so they are entitled to some sort of service paid for by public money, no? Increasing the tax take through closure of loopholes and proper enforcement at the top end and applying proper management disciplines within the NHS itself will help the situation. No amount of party political basis should blind people to the reality of the number of government members with financial interests in private health care companies.

I have a daughter who is a young doctor. She has seen patients laying on floors of late when no beds were available. The flu viruses have caused some of this. Junior doctor posts are not being filled due to some leaving for Australia where working practices are better or simply doing locum work instead-so working when they wish and at a higher pay rate i.e one that costs the NHS more, I believe. She disapproves of the "tactic" by some doctors to work in this way, but it seems the vast majority have had enough of Jeremy Hunt. Teresa May's suggestion that G.P's work 7 day weeks on the same financial settlement is scarcely designed to inspire morale either.Young doctors are largely avoiding G.P roles, so long-term this issue will also get worse.Supporting Palace also puts me at greater risk of heart-failure, so I'm concerned.

It is if you are on benefits and don't pay tax or NI. Of course it is, its also free to people who earn less than the tax threshold in general as well. I'm not sure what your point is, because if they paid tax or NI, it would only come from an increase in their welfare payments.

I am afraid I haven't read every post in this thread and so it is possible I am revisiting ground that has already been covered. The original poster asked 'What's the view from the inside?' I am a hospital doctor and this is my 12th winter working in the NHS (I skipped to Australia for 2 winters about 10 years back). I have discussed this winter with colleagues who have worked as long or longer than I and my overall considered opinion is I have absolutely no idea if this year is better, worse or the same as previous years. At ground level (from where I cannot see the 'big picture') it seems essentially the same as every other winter. From the moment I arrive at work until 1-2 hours after my shift should have finished I work without a break and see an essentially limitless number of patients. This has always been the case. The ICU I work on is at capacity. This is always the case. Elective operations at my trust have so far almost always gone ahead, and while I have been on I don't believe we've cancelled a single operation for a patient with an urgent indication for surgery (such as cancer). I have not been told once I can't prescribe a drug or offer a treatment because we can't afford it. At the end of every month I get paid. I am not saying that things are okay, are better or are worse than ever before. Just from the inside (but at ground level) it is just not possible for me to tell. It certainly feels similar to every other winter.

You were giving as good as you got in that argument - it was when you simply started out where you left off effectively in the next thread. It wasn't for abuse or prejudice, it was 'carrying the personal issues over into a new thread, after being warned in a previous one.' The nature of the proceeding thread was such that a warning felt like a better option than just giving four people cards.
