Just finished reading it. Cried lots . The part where robert drives away and stops the truck and gets back out and looks at her. Broke my heart. Pain between the pages of a book.

But she does choose in the end.

She chooses keeping the family together over following her heart when she looks for him years later he's died. Made me cry

Well she says something like she's given her life to her family and she's going to give her eternity to her love and also she has her ashes set to the wind at the same bridge as Clint rather than be buried in the family plot.

Yes that's after her own husband dies. What a dilemma. Stay in a loveless marriage for the family sake or go with your heart.

One of the few benefits of being Catholic!! I don't know if you agree, but the book is quite sentimental and I know is not to everyones taste. But I think the film is a masterpiece and Meryl Streep and Clint are perfect - it's just that I can't watch it anymore!!

I think Clint Eastwood was perfectly suited to the role . When I read it he was the picture I had in my mind. Glad I watched the film before reading the book actually. I don't normally read romantic or sentimental things like this but there's something about that film and story. Just something which gets me x

Well when she was a young girl in Bari, I don't think her idea of the US was Iowa - and then, years later, along came Clint.

The idea you do what's right at the time and wait and wait and one day its too late. There are no more tomorrows anymore. That's probably what speaks loudest to me

High plains drifter for me. There's a strong message in that film that what goes around comes around eventually. After that all the dirty Harry movies, Pale Rider and TBH most of them are watchable and decent films. The man is a legend and is still directing at 86!

Someone briefly mentioned The Beguiled - it's one of my fav films, Don Siegel directed (Dirty Harry, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and he's the barman in Play Misty) - fantastic dark twisted film, Clint's an injured Yankee soldier in a school for southern belles during the Civil War and they compete for his attention, the rejected ones get nasty - top, top film.
