There is a history of Palace players being overlooked when they were clearly better than the alternatives. See Andy Johnson (played on the wing when given a chance?), Ian Wright, John Salako and Richard Shaw (selected for the pointless England B team), amongst others, In fact, I think one Gareth Southgate didn't get into the England team until he joined Borough? Wilf deserves a chance. At his best he can beat half a team and run the full length of the pitch. He has also matured this season in my view and we are not seeing the petulance of last season. If he had joined Spurs he would be in the England squad and I don't think that's even speculation. The same as if Dann had joined a so-called big club. Having said all that I don't bother watching England any more as it's incredibly depressing and lacking in passion. I may even support my found home when they play each other Richard Shaw B team, really, would have been lucky to get in the Z team.

How Glen Johnson is above Joel Ward in the pecking order I will never know.

Just read that Townsend has replaced Sterling in the squad. Apparently Southgate realised that Sterling is the most overrated player in the prem (or that he is just injured). Edit - just seen that I am a bit slow off the mark and this has already been commented upon. Edited by Bexley Eagle (03 Oct 2016 5.17pm)

Don't Southgate and Zaha have 'issues' since the U21 days when Zaha was dropped at the request of Henderson? If this is the case. then Zaha will never play for England. while Southgate is in charge. I hear he is a strict disciplinarian, if you go out of line while representing England, you never play again. He has done this a few times in charge of the U21s.

Erm. Yeah it is speculation. It is almost the definition of it. Anyway I agree with the rest of it. But personally I don't see much upside in Palace players playing for England. Just an opportunity for them to be told -- right or wrong -- that the grass is greener elsewhere. Ok, so that was probably hyperbolic of me, but my point was that if a star-quality player joins a big team this is almost always followed by a place in the England squad. I'm pretty sure at least a dozen teams in the PL feel the same way about their players too, so this isn't a 'poor Palace' comment.

Comfortably in the top 5 players in the division so far. Anyone who thinks Zaha/Towsend are in the same class are far more guilty of bias than the England manager.

Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |
