Johnny (Budgie) Byrne

My late father started supporting Palace when they played at the Herne Hill cycle track (probably around 1916),and he reckoned that Johnny Byrne was the finest player ever to wear the shirt. He was my hero in the late 1950s and there have been some very fine players representing us since then but in my opinion he was the greatest.

Totally agree Current fans will NEVER realise how great he was In my school holidays I used to watch Palace training at Sanderstead, and many times in the training matches Budgie used to play in goal, when the play was down the other end of the field he used to put me in goal and take penalties,i don't remember stopping one. Budgie would have been the ideal striker for us today, how much would he have been worth in todays transfer valuations? One of our REAL greats,come on Steve do something COYP Where is the Joker shown, I haven't used it ?

Current fans will NEVER realise how great he was
In my school holidays I used to watch Palace training

Just to add my simple memories of the great Johnny Byrne. I remember that manager Cyril Spiers first played him at outside left and the young Byrne, always red-faced, used to chase anything that moved! The crowd loved him, not only for his obvious skill but also his tenacity and commitment to the Palace cause. Within a year or two he was the star of the side and I can still picture him chesting down Vic Rouse's goal clearances or trapping the dropping ball on his thigh before turning past the defender - all in one silky movement. We had never seen anything like it in those dark and distant Div. 3 South and Div. 4 days. What a player he was. He could do it all. Simply one of our best ever!

Thanks for your support but it seems nobody at the club is listening. I have heard of others' experiences of SP denying the Palace past which is hugely disappointing. One positive note is that I've had a response from Mark Bright on Twitter using #johnnybyrne so we'll see.
