We were linked with Wickham last year and the year before and I'm pretty sure fans then were salivating over the prospect. This season not so much! I guess its a measure of how far we've come but depending on the fee, this is a striker still yet to hit his prime with 3 years of prem experience under his belt. Adds that bit of strength and guile up front that Ameobi was bought in for but with greater pace which would compliment the front line. Could be striker we need.

I'm a little disappointed we haven't gone for Austin but I'm happy with Wickham. A friend of mine reminded me that Austin has got an injury concern with his knees. Austin is a great striker, but he maybe one big injury away from being finished. Wickham isn't prolific, but has potential. Can't wait for the start of the season

When we tried to get him a couple of seasons ago and failed I was gutted as I thought we had missed a good opportunity then he came back for Sunderland and scored some important goals for them that helped keep them up. I have felt we have needed a `main striker`, someone big and powerful who will eventually replace Murray, but would definatly like to have that striker and Murray at the club for at least next season so if the striker doesnt pan out we have Murray who can step in and/or the new striker could learn from Murray. In all honesty I had hoped Austin would be that man, getting wickham would have delighted me a year or so ago but I do wonder if the club has moved past him a bit now. It would effectvly end our chances of signing Austin and possibly this is a shame but Wickham could be a great signing, right sort of player for us and young......just going to be a big question if he is up to it or not (and im very pleased it shows we were not relying on Bamford as being our new striker)

Really unsure about this. He is not a prolific goal scorer though has often been played out wide which would't have helped. And he wouldn't have had the service he will get from Zaha Bolasie Cabaye and Puncheon. We were in for him last year which suggests this may have come from SP. Suspect he wont be cheap and currently feel really underwhelmed by the signing though I can see this could later look like a masterstroke

Very good signing. Young, plenty of potential to develop further and on his day, an absolute beast. When he's good, he's very, very good. He's played in an awful side that has employed often negative tactics due to always being in a relegation battle, that has little creativity and even less confidence...about the worst set up he could have had at the development stage of his career. He's have been better to stay at Ipswich a couple of years longer. Put him in a Palace shirt with the Holmesdale behind him and Cabaye, Puncheon, Wilf, Yala et al supplying him and mark my words, it'll be a different story. He's not moving from Sunderland; he's being emancipated. If Wickham fulfils even 75% of his potential, his value could easily double by next summer. What I think we're seeing is what Americans would call the introduction of a "rotation system" up front. We've clearly decided not to go for the one, big-name, multi-million pound main man (Austin, Adebayor, or whoever) and instead, probably based on current form, deploy a combination of Gayle, Murray, Chamakh, Bamford and Wickham according to the opposition and how they're playing at the time. Next summer, assuming we push on this season, we'll be in better position to pursue a bigger name target with the new TV money at our disposal. This move makes sense on all levels. It has a very high upside and at his best, Wickham gives us a forward who could be a key player for many years. Very happy.

Long term replacement for Murray. Similar mould but quicker and more agile. Better than Adebayor or some other who has no PL experience.. Very pleased. Sir your flag!

Wow, this really came out of nowhere. Big and powerful, and still only 22. I reckon we could see his potential fulfilled under Murray's tutelage. Would be very happy with this and we'd have a really well-rounded strike force for next season.

Went to France on Monday believing that we may be in the market for a Austin/Ramos, return tonight to find it's Connor Wickham.....Underwhelmed, over valued and the equivalent of Campbell, sure to strike fear into many premiership defences. Going forward no taking two steps back Yes. Probably paying £8m plus

I still can't help but think our priority should be a new CB, especially with the addition of Bamford.
