Tommy Langley.

The week before we bought him, I was talking to then manager, Dario Gradi. He asked me what I thought of Langley. My reply was along the lines of '' couldn't trap a bag of cement....a willing work/cart horse of a player ''

Five days later he was ours, and for a quite large fee.

His partnership with Chris Jones struck fear in the heart of the fans. Our own, i mean.

But he never gave up, chased every ball, and attitude wise he was spot on.

Got to be Rudi for me!

Away at Swindon in the Play Off semi final (before we went on to beat Blackburn in the final) Baking down sunshine in the away end. Cross comes in from Swindon and I see Rudi/Bambi moving towards it. And swiftly faint! Only time I've ever fainted - the sun or Rudi? We'll never know but I have a good idea...! ;-)

Now here's Wright, his first chance to see what he can do, and he's through, it's Wright, ohhhh what an impact by the substitute. And it's Ian Wright who's sent the Palace fans into ecstasy!

And what about good players that you didn't like? Or does that warrant a whole new thread?

That's another can of worms. Andy Gray looks a prize one in this light. Given a chance by Palace from lowly Dulwich Hamlet, 'allowed' into the first team to play irresistibly well, get into the First Division and win an England cap. Did he say thanks Steve (Coppel)? did he thank his team mates? did he thank his adoring fans? Non of this, he refused to play while driving around Selhurst in his 'flashy' car, until Villa (stupidly trying to replace their own, great Andy Gray), paid a fortune for him. And to them he was rubbish.

I was actually quite pleased when we signed him, I saw him make his debut as a 16 year old for Chelsea in 1976 I think it was and he had a good start to his career, little did I know how crap he'd become, should've known really the type of player we were bringing in at that time!!
Did we really pay a large fee for him? I can't remember that, I thought we were pretty much skint at the time.

2 that stick out for me:

Steven Thomson
Andrew Martin

Thomson was a willing worker, but never really lasted and was soon sold on. He did end up playing for my team in Scotland, St Mirren, so I got to cheer him on again.

Andy Martin was one of those young players thrown in when we were skint. Always tried, never looked like scoring, managed 1 goal I think in his time.

More recently

Sandor Torghelle - I thought we had signed a striker who was going to get 15-20 a season, I soon realised that this was disciplinary points! Scored a belter against Clowntown in the League Cup and then disappeared....

Dunno if it's a bit harsh to include Bruce Dyer in this, but I thought he was going to be f***ing great around 1996. Clearly he wasn't, but he was always a good pro and had a decent career, being relatively successful at all the clubs he played for.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham
