When the stadium is redeveloped, I think I heard somewhere that the plan is to do one stand at a time, starting with the Main stand.

Maybe the redevelopment should be to build stands with a similar or slightly larger capacity than they have now, with better facilities, but with an internal structure that would allow relatively easy and cheap upgrading to higher capacity stands should the demand be there. Also, redevelop them with a view to possibly filling in corners with seating, should the capacity still need increasing further.

Palace is situated in the most populated, densely inhabited part of Europe (expect Holland). There is firm history of Palace attracting high gates. Like newly constructed roads, the traffic will come. Just needs the commercial will. Oh, and a realistic pricing policy.

Agree - given PL status, good access, facilities and, importantly, affordable prices the crowds will come. See the German example.

Unless you build a 40,000 stadium, then we'll never get near 40,000 crowds. Who says it has to be full every week anyway?

When I was a kid my cousin played for palace and I came to the odd game.
I fell out with football for 30 years, and what got me hooked was a game in 2004 against Charlton drawing.. When palace went down... I got a free ticket off a mate who had a spare. The roars of the crowd is what sucked me in...AND I WAS HOOKED ONCE AGAIN, and not looked back.

For us to get others sucked in we need to still do the kids for a quid ( premier league or not) maybe for reserve games? and play the reserve games at home ( I do understand preserving the pitch is crucial) but getting people into the stadium is key. If people like what they see, they WILL ALWAYS come back.

We would never fill a 40.000 stadium every week even with the feel good factor of a new stadium. I for one dont really give a damn about the ground as long as its safe and you get a decent view and decent facilities in terms of toilets and catering! Unfortunately we currently come up short on most of these areas with poor catering and prices which means people spend their money outside the ground as better quality and far better value.
The club have always missed a trick on this side of things and when you go to other grounds they have better staff in terms of speed and bove all organisation and pricing. It appears we adopt the dont care how much we sell as long as we get a good flow of funds coming in so proces are hiked up. Rather than selling greater volumes of food and drink at a respectsble price to the Customer.
I would modify our ground and fill the corners in and that would create a better atmosphere, but the new grounds or (bowls) have killed the atmopshere for the clubs who have taken this approach.
Fibert Street, Aersome Park, Roker Park, The dell are all good examples of where the moves have been ruined the atmosphere and if you used to travel to this grounds for many years then you will probably get where I am coming from.
Football has turned Corporate and soon it will become like going to the cinema eating popcorn and drinking starbucks coffee which is just not good.
Football should be for working class and smell of horse s*** and burgers, and be affordable to all.
Thats why I would like the top teams to move off and make a boring super league (champions league style) and leave the normal clubs to continue on an even keel as it used to be.
I might be moving off piste a bit but the old days were far better for everyone! Perhaps we should all cancel our sky subscriptions as they have entirely ruined football in general. They only see 5 teams that count in the premiership which just about says it all really.

Good post GT.

I read somewhere that the Champions League will be changed to 64 teams so all the 'BIG' clubs eg Man U/Liverpool will get in it every year.

Even if they drop out of Top 4 in Prem.

It is all about MONEY.

Im with you on some of the sterile new stadiums geoff, but we could build something different, look at some of the stadiums in the usa, all different shapes and designs, with the famous crystal palace architecture we could be at the forefront of a new stadium design, all be it at selhurst, not saying it would be easy but things have moved on since some of these stadiums appeared ten years ago, just needs some forward thinking and lots of dosh which if we stay up will be in the bank!

In the current circumstances you are probably right but things change quickly in football.
Even if work started tomorrow it would not be finished for four years if they are doing it on a stand by stand basis. By that time we could be an established mid table Premiership team with ambitions to win a domestic cup, play in the Europa league AND have a brand spanking new stadium with top facilities. That sounds like a big club to me. And that is a club that will attract 40,000 fans every week. No doubt.
