In my worst palace team ever, 1 goal in 48 games
There's something about palace and crap strikers with "Andrew" in their surname...

At the risk of saying something completely ridiculous, I'd say that two popular objections to Palace players are that they are either:

A) Not 100% committed
B) Too slow

I think that for all of his faults, Andrews did not fail on either of these criteria. He failed in pretty much every other area though. Particularly anything that involved making contact with the football.

We may have discussed this before, but do you remember the game where someone played a through ball and he ran onto it, but the ball got caught between his feet and flew backwards comically, yet he kept on running, without ball?

In a lower mid-table Championship team he'd probably be a reasonable squad player, but he wasn't anything close to Premiership standard.

Probably the only real error Dowie made consistantly during that season was not playing Freedman more. But we essentially were relegated on the basis of a phenominally bad piece of refereeing at Norwich in which the Referee and linos must have been the only people present not to have seen the most blatent handball on the line (Red card, penalty in a game we came back to draw 3-3).

That single game had some of the most comical refereeing of all time.

Obviously Dowie was planning for a career move closer to home (in Charlton) by signing a classic clown for the season.

You couldn't fault the effort of Wayne Andrews, but he wasn't even good enough for league 1 let alone the top flight.

I think you might be wrong about that in that the game was at SP. AJ was upended three times and only got a pen when he ended up with a white stripe on his face. The handball was I think at the Whitehorse end and yes should have been a pen and a red. The two games with Norwich yielded draws and a win at Selhurst would have kept us up or failing that Ashton(?) signing for us instead of them.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

Yep, wasted opportunity to have a more intricate, technical player as plan B, in a side struggling for creativity. Instead, when losing games, reserve centre backs were put up front?!

I remember it fondly. It's my second favourite memory behind watching him get a yellow only a few minutes after coming on for a ludicrous two footed challenge that would have been a red for any other player. I think the ref saw the ball land on his round shiny head as he lay on top of a bemused defender and just thought "for him it's a day out, bless him, I'll let him off".

Andy Preece anyone?

I think he was better than Calvin Andrew !
At least Preece came to us with a goalscoring record at his previous club, Stockport.

Great hair style too, stayed in the game and was managing and coaching.

I've seen a pint of milk turn quicker!

But why Andrews?

Edited by Cucking Funt (16 Jun 2013 9.36pm)

The answer to the question is, because he was lightning quick. Problem was that he never mastered the art of taking the all important ball with him.

Presumably we signed Wayne Andrews on the basis that we couldn't get Calvin Andrew at the time. But my favourite Palace story stems from Wayne Andrews early goal, my uncles mate was late into the ground, and wouldn't believe him that we were 1-0 up already, esp when he said Andrews had scored.

Strange as it seems, Wayne Andrews had been prolific in front of goal prior to Palace.

The Calvin Andrews wikkipedia page has some amusing misunderstandings and statements by the big man himself and managers who clearly never saw his history.
