As far as I am concerned the EU is run by a German/French axis, whom appoint unelected commissioners to do their bidding. The lack of democracy, openness and fairness in the EU was one of the main reasons I voted Leave. I don't have a strong view on who has most influence within the EU, but certainly the UK can expect to have less outside it that it does now. Just curious though, if we did see a deal which was membership in all but name, is that something you'd be happy with? I can see your concerns about corruption and catering for the multinationals, I'm wondering if being run by a different elite will necessarily make any difference to that.

That's the Strand surely? Simpsons on Cornhill is a delight. It is also the dining venue for our irregular Holmesdlae Gentlemans lunches.

I want us out of Europe and if that means 'hard' Brexit, so be it.

I think we are missing that we have the veto and I don't think France and Germany do conspire against us particularly but it is there to block if necessary. Another point is that with single market membership that does not mean that the UK has a veto or in fact any say in how it is run, Norway just pay in and thats it. I don't think being a virtual one party state is better than the EU the surveillance bill recently passed with little opposition would not get such an easy ride in the EU.

I suppose the key to a future which is more demoscratic and transparent is to avoid vested interests taking a power grab during the transition. How do you reckon we might do that?

Completely different from me, who is an "indifferent" pleb. I don't care if I get pissed in a pub or a restaurant. And am willing to eat in either.
