'Tories delay ban on no-fault evictions again in 'grubby deal' with MPs who are landlords'. I've been waiting for something like this. 1 in 5 tory MPs make money from residential property. They have no shame, but the game is surely up.

Renters reform bill indefinitely delayed, we will not see it before the election, by tory landlords. A 2019 manifesto pledge. 5 million + people rent, it's hard to see why they would not choose labour.

So no protection for a landlord. Check the facts on debtors who refuse to pay, wreck the drum and cause total heartbreak with no comeback. Many of the landlords are people using the rent as an income to survive. Yes there should be a time line for good renters but how long?

Therese Coffey is now officially an embarrassment The Conservatives will get what they deserve at the next election, sadly so will the country as a whole Edited by HKOwen (25 Oct 2023 10.37am)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I am a landlord who depends for part of my income in retirement on the rent I get. Remember this is about “no fault” evictions. Those who don’t pay or trash your place can still be evicted and the proposed legislation includes provisions to make that easier. The problem being this necessitates court action for which there are log jams of which unscrupulous tenants are only too aware. It’s having to use the current court system which is the problem.

If they're struggling to survive, they could always sell their asset that's worth a few hundred thousand pound that someone else is paying off for them. There is not one person who 'needs' a rental income to survive.

Rishi Sunak is removing the cap on bankers' bonuses which were implemented in the wake of the banking crash to prevent reckless gambles. Now that the caps are being removed, the reckless behaviour is being encouraged, which will mean more hits to your pension funds, as well as higher costs of borrowing when the government has to bail them out again. This is actually Truss territory, well great. It was Sunak who helped bring down RBS leading to the crash, making himself rich at the expense of everybody else. As he and his government are doing all the time.

I assume that you must be talking about a landlord whose rental property is mortgaged - in which case he won't be getting those "few hundred thousand pounds" you talk about. And if he were to sell, the tenant would be the loser.

What the correct balance is between landlord and renter I wouldn't know. I'll say that property rights are very important....while also recognising that wealthy people shouldn't be able to abuse the housing stock situation on a frigging crowded island. I think that's my main annoyance with the whole situation....the housing stock. It's been over a generation's worth of politicians not doing their job. They have increased the population massively (which I obviously disagree with) but if you were going to do that the infrastructure needed to keep pace. This was not done and the media did not hold any of them to sufficient account. Just as when your standard of living goes down when your wage rises fall below inflation the chances of the next generation to own their own home goes down when population number outmatches housing growth. I'll stop now because I just get angry the more I think about it.....Sold the young people down the tube for their own selfishness in just about every metric you can think of. Most of Labour's front bench, and presumably more if anyone looks into it, own their massive council house. No dodgy dealing there Messrs Abbott and Corbyn. For two off the top of my head. Funny how the press doesn't care.

I've never understood the argument that if landlords sell up, it's bad for tenants - the house doesn't just disappear; it's either sold to another landlord and can still be rented, or it's sold to an owner-occupier. If another landlords sell, prices come down, and more tenants can stop paying someone else's mortgage and start paying their own.
