At least no one has had to do a deal with the SNP.

I think I am now officially an opponent of FPTP.

1. Voting in a 20 year old student over a former foreign secretary makes a joke of the constituency link.

2. UKIP gets 10% of the vote but only 1 seat.

It is untenable.

Er we had a plebiscite on this in 2011 and a two thirds majority voted for no change.

Well I for one have changed my mind. I used to like FPTP.

If we had a referendum tomorrow - on PR, AV is not good enough - then I would support it.

Greens and UKIP get over 20% of the vote between them. 2 seats out of 650.

The Essenpee get a quarter as many votes but 55 seats.

It's untenable.

Its neither democratic nor representative, it can't even really deliver 'stable governments' given that in the last three elections, the majority's have been either tiny (labour or conservative) or a coalition.

The interesting thing now though is with labour extinct in Scotland, they'll likely as not never be able to form a majority without proportional representation (and I can't see the SNP getting less popular in Jocklandia).

Labour will have to at some point, deal with the SNP or face never winning an election majority.

If Green and UKIP did get 20% as you say (seems slightly higher than the figures I saw earlier) then that still means that ~80% voted for Conservatives, Labour and SNP - most of which would vote to keep FPTP if we have a referendum?

It's possible that Labour and Tory voters may have voted differently if we didn't have FPTP.

Very much so. I'm in a blue seat with around 15,000 majority - voting for anyone other than tory is a wasted vote. If your vote would actually count for something, it would make a big difference, I reckon

As of 9.45am:

UKIP votes: 3,765,863 (12.6%)
Green votes: 1,121,363 (3.7%)

Total: 4,887,226 (16.3%)

PR never suits the mainstream, well supported, which I guess after the ass raping Labour got in Scotland now means it the just the Tories who would rail against it.

The triumphant FMN look on the attractive Tory who caned him made me a little hard.

The LD collapse makes me want to cry. They have done a superb job in coalition and have remarkably done their part to achieve what many thought was impossible I.e. Keeping the government together. Vince cable and Danny Alexander have done great jobs. They have kept the looney right at bay and have helped run a tight ship without the swinging eat the poor policies the Tories would have certainly brought in.

And what is the motive for the I voted them last time but not this time brigade? You can't argue with those who understand what was on offer and preferred what the other guy offered. However, I can't help feeling that the majority who switched to no chance options in their constituencies like labour and the greens are waking up with a colossal headache at the fact that they have put the Tories in power.

Lol. That's what I love about Labour and the supporters.
So graceful in defeat.

Well done Cameron. And make no mistake, UKIP are a growing party and with the right resources will become a force in Parliament especially through by elections.

No more Ed Milliband. Hooray !
