All addicts, being humans, are different. It's wrong to generalise too much, but a true addiction, whatever it is to, is characterised by an uncontrollable compulsion to behave in a certain way, despite any negative consequences which may result. This definition may help: "Addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance. The term has been partially replaced by the word dependence for substance abuse. Addiction has been extended, however, to include mood-altering behaviors or activities. Some researchers speak of two types of addictions: substance addictions (for example, alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking); and process addictions (for example, gambling, spending, shopping, eating, and sexual activity). There is a growing recognition that many addicts, such as polydrug abusers, are addicted to more than one substance or process."
But I think debating whether or not one has a choice is counter-productive. So what if you don't have a choice? You still have a problem and need help and, in the real world, nobody can help if you don't help yourself. It's the same with the clinically obese, alcoholics, drug takers etc. We all have our crosses to bear, some are heavier than others, but bear them we must! There's way too much harping on in psycho-babble that goes on and not enough toughening up and dealing with the real world. KL probably does have some issues, she has my sympathy, but if so, she also needs to toughen up and sort it out herself. It's the real world.

She needs rehab, she's in pattern of behaviour she cannot break herself, and I tell you what, she won't get much pity in there but if she really wants to stop it's a chance for her, and she'll have a solid support network for her. Hey she might even meet someone. I felt like saying that to her a few times on emais we swapped, don't fancy that now, but if you're reading this hun the news is that it never gets better, only worse until... your choice. cheerio from a chump.

I think the thread is nearing the end. I urge people , yet again, not to track KL over the internet. Just to emphasise a few key points: 1) She flounced and brought this into the HOL domain Whether she has personal issues , or not, is not for anyone to judge on here. I would not feel any guilt for her potential future actions, as she feels no guilt for me. Some classically funny posts, nonetheless.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Do you know what, dan - i'd be agreeing with everything you've said IF i hadn't read those replies to FH's texts/pms. Addiction does not automatically mean someone behaves in an extremely rude and uncouth manner. She could have controlled that.
