Unless we're going to be hiding away until a vaccine comes along anyway. If they'd told us all to wear masks early on, I can see sense in that. Combined with a degree of social distancing maybe we could've avoided a total shut down. I alternate between thinking "let's blast through this" and "we're doomed to have a second wave". The balance between health and the economy is a tough one, but unless the numbers become unthinkable, is another shutdown realistic?

A lot of it is meaningless because it wasn’t and has never been a lockdown. It’s a shutdown of most things. Remember the free for all in the supermarkets for weeks? And the airports were never closed apart from repatriated brits coming home.

IMO they told us not to wear masks early on because they didn’t have enough for the nhs let alone the general public. That’s also why they are now careful to say face coverings rather than masks so that it doesn’t conflict with the earlier advice. To be fair, they’ve spent most of the time with few “good” choices so inevitably they were going to get a battering in the press whatever they decided to do mask wise early on. I genuinely think one of the biggest problems in our country is the amount of international travel that we enjoy. There was bound to be more super spreaders here than in a lot of other European countries and it was pretty much guaranteed that the worst affected countries would be the UK and the US (in particular New York as the major international European gateway to the East coast of the US). I think the biggest error by this Country and I refuse to say this government because they are all culpable, is the lack of pandemic planning. They all admit they ignored the advice that we were not ready to deal with a scenario like the one currently face.

A lot of ours are untested on death and only gone on presumed covid death. Germany dont include care homes or general population and India clearly not counting outside of hospitals. If all counted the same then it would be a proper comparison. Spain apparently could have had double their reported number. Dont worry though as we are testing face coverings atm and results expected in a week or two.

Second wave beginning to show itself across a number of States in the US. "Though the outbreaks come weeks into state reopenings, it’s not clear that they’re linked to increased economic activity. And health experts say it’s still too soon to tell whether the massive protests against police brutality that have erupted in the past two weeks have led to more infections." It also says later in the article that the second wave will look different from the first one because we're in a different place now.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

And the airports were never closed apart from repatriated brits coming home. That's probably a better description really, shutdown vs lockdown. The numbers are down in part because of precautions being taken, but largely because there was nothing to do and nowhere to go to begin with other than what the government arbitrarily allowed.

You're right, but I wish they'd have been forthright about that, or at least suggested face coverings from the beginning of all of this, as they really do appear to make a significant difference. The planning point is a good one, but it's all so easy in hindsight and there are still various approaches being used across the world. Brazil just plan on ploughing right through it for instance. For a time I thought the New Zealand approach was the wrong way to go, as it kills off tourism and travel. But now I'm thinking, well at least it allows all other aspects of life and the economy to continue. They'll likely hang on in there until a vaccine or better treatments are found then gradually open up.

Even in a best case scenario where people try to get their businesses up and running again, if the numbers carry on going up, it's going to screw things up once again. It's fast looking like the next 12 months are a right-off.
