Those of us of a certain age will lament the passing of those great West Indies sides of the 70s and 80s with a seemingly endless supply of great batsmen and bowlers. I remember the look of bewilderment on the faces of some of our batsmen when facing their pace bowlers, especially Brian Close ( pre helmet days) v Michael Holding. Those were the days - long days for everyone else. Or short when batting against the West Indies pace attack. Apparently West Indians often go into American sports these days, rather than cricket.

Last year Ashes was two each and a draw wasn't it? Australia didn't win from 2-0 up. Teams are giving the West Indies games currently to give them some funding. They're straight onto South Africa. South Africa and excellent one day side but not so sure about tests. Still probably better than West Indies. I should have really mentioned i was refering to series played in Australia (which are on main stream TV over here) as opposed to to their overseas series which are shown on usually only show on Foxtel (the Aussie equivalent of Sky Sports) The pitches, weather, stadiums and travel are very unique and make it hard for teams coming out to adjust. Particularly the pitches which are faster and bouncier than what other countries come across. Edited by viveasheagle (01 Aug 2024 8.07am)

He didn't look too happy in the end - but in fairness there are signs of improvement in West Indies cricket. They were always the best team to watch back in the day and have such a list of true greats. Legends even. In my mind, Walsh was a better bowler than Ambrose but clearly I wouldn't say that to him or his mum!

The number of competing sports for a small population hurts them as does the shorter versions of the game. The best players focus on making money more than test cricket. Also more batsman are better against fast men in general due to net machines being able to reproduce those speeds.....real fast bowlers are still special in the game but it isn't as dramatic as before.

It's true about bowling machines and also helmets and body armour have enabled batsmen to play all sorts of reverse sweeps and ramp shots which use the bowlers speed against him.

Good game between Sri Lanka & India today. India needed one run to win with 15 balls left and lost two wickets in consecutive balls for a tie.

I am sufficiently advanced in age to recall the days when the wearing of helmets was not mandatory and the only limited overs matches in this country took place on Sundays when the 'International Cavaliers' played the County teams.

Mike Brearley wore a sort of plastic skull cap before helmets came into the game. But then he had more brains to protect than many players.
