He only agreed to fight him after he had been retired for 2 years, and at light heavy. He avoided him like the plague in the mid-90’s when all he had to lose was an IBF title. I stand by my previous statements. Good fighter, great fights with other good fighters. I think it could be said many fighters avoided fights. You don’t end up with great records otherwise, Calzaghe included. RJ he played it well, was up there, but hung around too long. These latest moves are non-sense.
With respect, Jones fought far better fighters than Steve Collins and the thought that Jones avoided him is laughable mate.

Jones did things in the ring I have never seen done by another boxer. Jones would have to have been 200% better than he was when they fought. Jones never fought anyone who could throw a many punches for 12 rounds as Calzaghe.

When you have older successful fighters at the end of their careers with Calzaghe and Collins being examples you often find that they want to avoid the hungry up and coming prospects. What they want are the big pay days and that means big established names......as they are fighters also at the back end of their careers these are often easier and well paid fights compared to the up and coming killers who come with a lot of ambition but little money. So I can understand why Collins avoided Calzaghe and Calzaghe in turn avoided Froch. For fans, it's all about the best and exciting fights.....but for most fighters it's about the most money for the least risk.

And Calzaghe never fought anyone like a prime Jones. Joe was brilliant but most of his 20 odd defences were against B and C level fighters. Jones fought everyone and could do things in a ring never seen before. There are two Roy Jones, the one up to the Tarver loss and then the shot one after. Lived Joe but it’s hard to see how he would win. Remember he narrowly beat an ancient BHop and only one on a split against Robin Read.

There’s a good Tyson compilation on YouTube which is worth watching to remember him at his peak. The commentary’s a bit annoying. Cheers pal. The man was a class above. I'd prefer to remember his hay day than watch him now.

It's fun to speculate the "what ifs" in boxing. How would RJ cope with Marvin Hagler at his peak? Back to Joe C: I initially thought Joe C lacked the killer punch to be a great. It was when he fought a highly thought of and hard hitting Jeff Lacy that I changed my mind. It was a masterclass. Joe simply didn't need a haymaker. His punching was so accurate Lacy was beaten after 3 rounds.
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

Mayweather is an artist with the way that he fights, but happily never watch another of his defensive performances again, give me a GGG or Lomachenko any day. It’s like a golfer that hits it 100 yards straight everytime, you score well, but would love to be able to drive it 300 yards.

For anyone who missed it last night, Cheesman v Eggington was a classic. Pure brutality.

Micheal Nunn to make a comeback to professional boxing at age of 57 having spent 17 years in prison! Nun was a brilliant fighter until he lost to James Toney.

Jimmy Cable died last weekend. Bit of a legend round my way, unfortunately the booze got hold of him. I hear that most of Orpington used to travel when he was fighting. He was British Champion and held a form of the European title, a good pro but almost untouchable in the unlicensed game once he’d retired. Used to see him knocking about, often in a Palace coat , I looked him up born in Penge apparently. RIP Edited by Casual (17 Aug 2020 5.43pm)
