Thatchers greatest achievement was probably to deny the Conservatives of their greatest post war prime minister in Michael Hessletine. I very much suspect had he come to power in 1980 rather than Thatcher, he'd have still been PM well into the 1990s. The conservatives always bang on about Thatchr, but Hessletine was by far a more skilled politician, orator, statesman and leader. As I've said before she got stuff wrong, anyone who had to sort out what she did is bound to have I just can't understand the myopic entrenched view of the left. It was that inflexibility at the time that helped make things more confrontational than necessary. Just read this and thought it fairly well balanced. As I've said before she got stuff wrong, anyone who had to sort out what she did is bound to have I just can't understand the myopic entrenched view of the left. It was that inflexibility at the time that helped make things more confrontational than necessary.
