The Police and Home Office have a new initiative over hate crime to deal with the rise, so I don't think its entirely untrue - Of course there are an't gangs of Leave voters roaming the street looking for migrants to beat up.... but

Most of these hate crimes are done by yobs with no allegiance to any political party or political reason. Here in Plymouth a couple of months back a Polish family had their wooden shed burnt down which the police thought was a hate crime when in fact it was four kids having a laugh with a box of matches and a can of lighter fuel.
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

So you're saying the police and government had been ignoring hate crime or wrongly classifying hate crimes? Sounds worse to me than an actual spike.

They over-turned one of the largest Tory majorities in the country. In a seat where Tory MPs and Tory and UKIP activists were actively campaigning for and supporting Zac Goldsmith. They are playing the card because it worked. Edited by OknotOK (02 Dec 2016 11.44am)

I agree that the voice of people should be heard. However, this by election victory, just like the referendum vote, cannot be centred on one cause or reason, as much as certain people would like to do that. The causes of this result do include Brexit, Zac Goldsmith for the second time in recent history deploying a terrible strategy, Zac Goldsmith's general unpopularity, a very good campaign by the Lib Dems and the Heathrow expansion. No it can't. It was almost exclusively a vote on the Brexit campaign. Acknowledged by the Goldsmith campaign and the government. As well as the Lib Dems who won it. How it can have been about Heathrow expansion when both candidates had the same stance on it I'm not sure. Goldsmith's tarnished reputation after his dog whistle campaign for mayor may have been a small factor, but he remained very popular in Richmond and well supported. He lost because the Lib Dems turned it into an effective mini-referendum on Brexit. And a very pro-Remain borough voted for a pro-Remain candidate.

I agree with this, i too have a few tribal tory friends saying the same thing. They voted tory historically because of the perception of lower taxes and better with the economy. They say the latter has been blown out of the water and the tories have morphed into UKIP. It does mean however there will be no snap general election as TM must sense now she could lose The other reason there wont be a snap election is because the Government would have to repeal the fixed term Parliament Act through the Commons and the Lords. Or table a vote of no confidence in itself

No not at all but a lot of crimes have not been logged by the police as well you know. Excuse being they are too busy for all of them and to be honest cannot be arsed as well you know again.

Which I suspect may be the outcome of the Article 50 parliament act.

Edited by legaleagle (02 Dec 2016 7.51am) You guys are hilarious. So a constituency that voted 70% remain, something totally out of line with the country, votes a Remainer into power with the main opposition quitting his party and becoming an independent and you think this means that the country want a second referendum? You couldn't make it up.

Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of whether there should be an election - calling an election for party advantage seems precisely why it is right to have fixed terms parliaments but there are two routes to an election. First is two thirds of MPs to vote for an election - which would mean Labour would have to support the motion OR the Government lose a confidence motion. In effect government would have to table a vote of no confidence in itself. That would be a huge risk for May to take
