Inflation is hundreds of percent in Argentina currently - but it's not exactly the rise of fascists. People seem to forget the actual far-right are not going to be voted in democratically. There are real, actual far right out there - but they're really out there: not exactly widespread or popular. Yep, calling him far right is just for the dim valley girls and soy boys. Like you say he's a free market guy and libertarian. Fascism and communism are both statist and he seems to be the opposite of that. But they are going to come for him, like they did for Bolsonaro and Trump now...even though Bolsonaro improved the economy......I suspect he isn't a soft touch and will clear them out first but we will see. Whoever wins in 2024 it's going to be very turbulent in America....whoever wins I suspect the result will be contested on some grounds fairly or not. It's going to get nasty after about a decade of increasing polarisation and increasing drifting apart of both mainstreams. No one backs down and compromises anymore because there is less and less in common. Protests, riots, you could even get terrorism. Whoever wins there will be civil unrest and at some point supply chains and markets could be affected. We will see. Edited by Stirlingsays (21 Nov 2023 8.20pm)

What is reasonable, or far right, depends entirely on where your own political views lie on the spectrum. He is not a socialist. Nor a centralist. Hardly on the centre right either. Trump like populist certainly but to many far right is a very fair description given his approach.

Yes, he rounded up his opponents and tortured them in a football stadium. The military are roaming the streets beating non-conformists and the country is enacting race laws. The Falklands better watch out. He's already cancelled the next election. Not yet. Better watch out though. They start with words that people want to hear, then when they start to hear dissent coming back because of things they fail to do they turn to oppression to control opponents. Just look at Orban!

It won’t be like this at all after the 2024 election if Trump loses. Once he has stopped wailing and carrying on like the giant toddler he is, he will realise that his political career is over. The GOP will have to reincarnate itself in a new friendlier form and we will all move on. The crazy fringes that Trump has energised and brought together will fall away to the fringes again. And we can all get on with living our lives back to when things were great before 2016. Labour will crush the Tories in the election over here, thus ending populism and division in this country. And the noisy minority can go back to be just that under Farage’s party, thus breaking the Tory party apart even more and making them less likely to return for a very long time. Stay out of betting shops. But hey, I'm happy that you're happy......Just don't have a pop at me if it goes all Pete Tong for the left.

I can just see there being a push to move thing back to central ground and an end to the tiresome culture wars. It’s no good for any society to have such chasms in them.
