Does Howe deserve a crack at the prep? Personally he should be in a champ club proving his worth, he failed at the prem in all honesty.

I feel a champ level manager with potential should be considered for us.

I also think we should totally restructure ourselves and Parish should come out and say it.

For instance, a yo yo club doesn't break the bank to get promoted from the champ, they don't break the bank to stay in the league either. They get in the prem, have a couple of years, collecting the money, go down, have another go, you get an exciting season then back in the big league.

I feel for us, we should look at the league as split in two. Top ten, bottom ten. Top ten you got your united, cities, Chelseas etc they all spend big, as the reward is bigger, the demand is bigger.
For us, we should look at it as 11th is top of our league with the added bonus of a cup run. We should be 16th/17th in terms of wages, bringing in exciting youth, a stepping stone for champ players to prove their worth and we should be having fun seasons where we get to 40 points comfortably and then focus on the cups after xmas.

We should not be held hostage to this league and be terrified of going down... relegation should not be the end of the world, that just shows piss poor club management.

do I want us to be a yoyo club, no... do I want us spending big bucks... nope. Do I want some excitement, 100%.

This is the best post I've read for ages. The idea of 11th being a sensible target for us is exactly how I feel. I love being in the Prem and think a strong youth policy is the answer to spending the big bucks as we can't afford it.

Being in the prem is the only place to be. But a cup run would be nice. There has rarely been any intention of trying to get past the first hurdle under Hodgson

This is a really interesting post. It reminds me of Norwich currently. I can't help but think that their fans are having more fun than ours.
I suppose our issue has mainly been the big signings - Benteke and Sakho. They didn't do that kind of thing, I also can't imagine Norwich paying the wages we do.
I would be happy with the situation described.
I don't like two of the mind sets we have currently. One is we need negative football to survive - Leeds are showing you don't. The other is if you have a cup run you go down, that doesn't have to happen either.
I think what we lack is competition for places. With more competition for places, I'm sure we could do better.

I'm sure Norwich fans are enjoying their football right now, just like I'm sure they enjoyed it when they got promoted two years ago.

On the other hand, I doubt they got much joy from getting their pants pulled down every single week last season, or that they would/will enjoy it again next season.

Agree 100% with your post :-) Just perhaps with the big earners nearly out of contract we are now focusing on a Leeds and Norwich set up which will entertain us fans?

One has to feel sorry for Hodgson at times as half of the fans complain that he doesn't intend to win cup games and the other half want to use the cup to experiment with youngsters in the side.

Poor bloke can't win

Presumably then you got no enjoyment whatsoever out of our cup runs under Pardew and are quite happy to go out to Colchester, Derby etc., or to our trouncing by Wolves. Must be a joy for the youngsters / squad players who can’t get in the first team to play in those games.

I doubt your sarcasm adds anything to the debate. As I recall we did make a QF in the F A Cup under Hodgson which included a win over Spurs. Of course, the players were 2/3 years younger than they are now and generally less injury prone (apart from Wickham , of course).

The question for the club owners is: How much money does a cup run bring in as opposed to how much does another season in the PL bring in? I suggest the answer is a no-brainer and that Hodgson is simply managing the diminishing player resources to achieve what Parish and Co probably see is the Holy Grail - another PL season.

We fans can either like it or lump it. I genuinely believe that things will improve and that there will be future cup runs in the not too distant future, but first we need to address our ageing squad dilemma, and that will take more than a transfer window or three.

Roy has been a safe pair of hands as the club has been run with a short term view that only now are we starting to see change.

I disagree that Howe outrightly failed, he patently didn't given Bournemouth's previous placings. My question is around whether he can cut it with a bigger club.

I'm confused ( not difficult ! ) by your yo-yo club comments. On one hand you are extolling the financial virtues of the situation but then on the other saying you don't want Palace to be that club. And although Norwich and Watford look like making an instant return, have a look at bigger clubs than those that failed to do so and have huge debt into the bargain.

I think in the wages ' league table ' we will start to descend as we release the higher earners - that started with Meyer.

While I understand the sentiments behind your ' wish list ', it's not as easy to achieve as you make it sound - far from it.

Glad you've enjoyed this season so much and that your crystal ball makes you correct. I expect them to be better than us next season, and if they're not, they won’t break the bank either. It's us with the mad wages for permanently injured players, not them. It's us thinking it's great if we luck out a nil nil draw. Our aspirations are zero. Who knows, maybe there's a plan? I can guarantee Norwich have one.

No worries uphill, it's all downhill from here.

I've remarked on more than one occasion that these threads often end up miles away from their original target. 'Roy In' ended up 'Roy Out' and 'Roy Out' ended up 'Roy In'.

Nothing new, but I guess that's how all debates go. One thing leads to another.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
