I should say I didn't change my mind entirely based on the post. It got me thinking and then my thoughts were fleshed out in a not very impartial article I subsequently read elsewhere, leading me to conclude that the HOL poster (possibly Hrolf) made sense.

Indeed, but the question really is why isn't it, because those who benefit from the system, find that exploitation is beneficial to them - and its easier to exploit people if they're dependent on you, and in fear of their livehoods and economic stability. The problems of morality, is that people are not moral, part of the role of state has to be to regulate and control, in order to limit the extent of exploitation, and ensure the well being of all of its people - not just those who they identify with. The problem with capitalism is the same as with socialism, you can't rely on people to make the moral decision to 'do right' over their own self benefit and interest. That has to be what the state is there for.
Wise words Mr Martin but the state is run by the self interested. They are just like the rest of us.

S'alright, you are preaching to the converted here. I was there in the 80's under Thatcher. Pretty much everything that has gone wrong or gotten worse in regard to the big issues like housing, education, the railways, the increase of the underclass, etc, have their nascence under her tenure and policies. And for Brexiteers I will again remind them that it was her and other Tories in Government that actually signed up to everything you hate about the EU today. Not the Left, not Labour, not the Liberals but the good ole Conservative Party. So are you saying she was dragging the country kicking and screaming into it then? Change is always hard for people to accept...whether in or out. So don't feel bad...

I am in an area where you need £450,000 to buy any old ruin.

Actually, there was a post that I think was on this thread quite early on that did make me change my mind. It's unusual but yes. I went on a hunt for it yesterday and couldn't find it. I had in my mind it was something Hrolf posted within the first 2 or 3 pages, but I may have dreamt it. Was it the one about gays? Are you now 'reaching for the rainbow'?

In Michaels mind 'people voted for Thatcher but didn't vote for what Thatcher did'. Just like 'people didn't vote to leave the single market but did vote to leave the EU'. I.e., its bollocks.

The problem is that everyone has rather large mortgages. Ignoring economic reasons for a crash, if I have a £200k Mortgage on a £300k house and it drops to £275k, I am suddenly in negative equity and stuck where I am. I wouldn't be able to move freeing up property at the lower end

I'd agree...but then owning a house isn't a right ....is it? Its an aspiration. I know my parents and their parents before them didn't see it as a right.

That's an odd coincidence because I had a dream the other day that somemone took my posts seriously. I hope it wasn't the one about Gusset's arse. That probably isn't true. Probably.
