Any second referendum would spell the death knell for the credibility of British democracy and a huge move to the right of politics at the next election.

I think you over-estimate how many really care about Brexit as much as you Hrolf. There was massive venting at the Referendum and I reckon being a protest vote amongst the 51.9% was way stronger for many than that of the ideological Hard Brexiteers. UKIP did, after all, gather no more than 14% at the General Election.
Good news for the 48.1% which is increasing from what I have been reading. Reality is biting.
