Surely nobody can blame Roy for last night's result? Our cut price team stood up pretty well to Chelsea's high priced outfit. Where was the game management? Where were the substitutions? We might have got a point at the least. Losing concentration is likely tiredness. Having not managed the squad well all season exacerbates the tiredness. We needed subs on the hour or around that mark.

Very poor Chelsea team and Roy gives others too much respect. The other thing about Pullis he knew how important it is too defend and score set plays. Edited by grumpymort (13 Feb 2024 11.23am)

I agree that Pulis was adept at defending leads. We looked solid. Last night’s more encouraging display shouldn’t mask the fact that we conceded another 3 goals and continue to look vulnerable .

And presumably that much more difficult to find a replacement. And to answer your question, staying up I wouldn't consider a success just preferable to the alternative. Lots of lessons to be learned from this season. Parish is many things but stupid is not one of them.

I respectfully disagree with any excuses for the manager last night. I'd think it delusional to say we should be expecting a result against Chelsea so my comments are not in isolation. GK - Unless there is something behind the scenes that the club are keeping completely silent upon, for whatever reason, the continued selection of Henderson over Johnstone is clearly an incorrect one and makes the investment in Henderson, above other areas that needed resourcing too, look absolutely insane. Poor substitutions - have been a theme since the beginning with Roy and last night was no different. We've now lost our best player due to a beyond bizarre decision. Conceding very costly goals either early or late in games - once, twice, maybe a few times this might be chalked down to bad luck but is clearly a management issue and continuous theme. Set pieces - the centre of his England debacle and we continue to be vulnerable to them and incapable of capitalising upon them for goals of our own. Fitness - Players looking shattered and long out of games well before they end. Shirking responsibility - The fans are unrealistic, the players aren't good enough, it was the medical staff, it's just bad luck. I'm unaware of any other professional context where blaming everything around you for poor performance is acceptable. We have the fourth lowest goal tally in the league, is it three home wins all season and only two wins in about fifteen games now - These are facts not opinions. What is the argument for Roy as a sincere question? He sets us up well? He makes us hard to beat even if we're not entertaining? He has vast experience? There's literally nobody else? May have been the case seasons before but the evidence for him, or lack of it this season, is reflected in the results. He sets us up negatively, lacks any ability to coach set pieces or even attacking play, man-management is in question, he's lost many fans, he can't manage in-game, seems overwhelmed by the mere concept of a substitution... the list goes on from what I can/have seen. The only argument for him that I can see is that there is nobody else to come in which is very pathetic if so. He looks to have run out of ideas this season. It's not vitriol or resentment, he just doesn't look capable of producing any better for us and completely out of water with the modern game and the opposition who've adapted for it. It might have been an improved performance against Chelsea but were there any changes there that the fans have not been calling for, for months now? In that case we're all better qualified already. We may have four key players out but that's a new development, not one that can be blamed for the months before. I'm not sure to what extent fans are supposed to be satisfied watching us lose, often quite pathetically, week after week whilst being told it's just unfortunate and we should hold our nerve as things will miraculously get better despite a vast array of grievances being held? It's a really sh!t situation, there can't be any doubt. It has all the hallmarks of the chickens coming home to roost following years of apathy in player investment and coaching appointments. It's happened at other clubs and may be happening here. It's no fun supporting Palace this season, not for me anyway, there's been so little to cheer let alone get excited about and it looks to be headed only one way. I'll keep plodding along to games however, singing GAO and cheering on the team as best I can though. I'm not one for banners, booing or any other demonstrations (although I don't criticise those that do so within reason) but my expectations and hope have left the building, as has my faith in the manager. Very good Nick. A tidy summary of the issues we face and our failure to deal with them.

Hodgsons involvement in the game (as I see it):- Look at Holmesdale online for the team sheet, but change the goalkeeper to give Chelsea a chance, play Hughes in attack where he can’t contribute and Wharton further back where he has too much work on to be creative. Give team talk before the game in order to completely demoralise them. (It worked we barely touched the ball for 10 minutes.) Half time demoralising team talk. “Defend the one goal lead like I always tell you” (Yes, we know what will happen) sure enough Chelsea score straight away. (Why do they listen to him, it happens almost every game. It is only as they forget what he said, they get better.) (Thought) “Need to get a message on they’ve forgotten what I said before”. Make a sub Take Hughes off and put a light weight on with the message “Attack Attack Attack”. Notice Franca is tiring (Thought) “The supporters were right our team has been so much better with the younger players, I had better put an old one on with the message “all out attack”. (Thought) “Another game where my contribution is obvious”.

These triangle passes between the goalkeeper and two defenders in own danger area also happened during Viera's reign and carried own by Hodgson. They just slowed down us getting ball upfield and/or transition from defence to attack allowing the opposition defence to regroup.

Ed Aarons in the Guardian has just reported that Parish has made a move for McKenna but been knocked back as McKenna doesn't want to move at this stage.
