Alternatively, as we're fairly safe this season, January could be the ideal time to sell him as it would give us half a season for Roy to see what players we need to make up for his loss, and hopefully stop us being held over a barrel quite so much, knowing that we need to replace him within the summer window.

I think that is a very good point, 3 wins and a draw from safety, if we get 4 points from Arsenal, Man city and Southampton before the window shuts could be good if Bats is involved in the deal.

What's the price at which Wilf would actually go. I.e. one that satisfies the buyer and us. Forget £80m. He's 2 years & 10 months from being 30. Who buys him now buys a player only to win things/secure Champions League football. And his goals & assists ratio is very poor for £80m and zero resale value. And there are other ways to do the same that are better long term. All the way down to £65m, I struggle to see why they would pay. At £60ish million it starts to make a little more sense for a buyer (but would still be problematic for lack of resale). But knock off 15% as Man U's cut (I've read bigger and smaller but 15% seems to have been the recurring figure). We are left with £51m. Difficult for us. Maybe Man U come in with £55m. He lifts them up the notch they need to guarantee CL football. He adds even more pace on the opposite flank to Rashford. Right or wrong, I'm convinced Parish feels a sense of fair play to let him go. And the moneyball-minded yanks will look at his age and stats and agree. But even at £55m net to us, I'm not convinced he'll go for the reasons stated. It's a gamble for everyone. I think his agent will tell him to play his bollocks off til summer to finally show his capabilities. Otherwise, he may well see out bus career at Selhurst. He signed a new 5 year deal at the beginning of last season - so not sure about fair play.

There will be no resale value for Wilf due to his age I guess that puts a lot of clubs off the fee. Personally I want him to stay but if he goes it won't be for £80m.

Either that has to be dealt with or the club is sold, and richer, or people willing to invest/spend their money, cover his retirement or eventual sale of not very much. Or he could get a long term injury or become less and less effective. I think what has been forgotten again is player power or sulk power, and Zaha and the press aren’t going to keep quiet in fear of detention. The pressure to let him go to a bigger club will continue until he’s no use to them and possibly little use to us. We should face reality and rebuild after a summer parting of ways.

PSG might be the best opp for him and us now. They can pay a large fee, he gets CL football, he can speak a bit of French allegedly and it's only 2 hours from London ...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, going from memory. Has played within himself this season( all be it with no creative support) Hes going this month, or in the summer. His value ( to potential buyers) is going down. I speculate that we will get 40-50 mill + honours add ons. So circa 65 mill in minus the 10 we paid utd for him minus another 15 for sell ons to utd = 40 mill. £40 mill net plus his input in getting us into the prem and staying there. Is that really so bad for an academy product? Sorry if that seemed complicated but the 40 mill net bit is the key.

The drawback of desperately trying to keep him here and aspire (to something we were never gonna be) was buying benteke and Sahko for fees would could not afford on wages we still cannot afford, therefore getting us into the current financial $hite we are clearly in now. The owners mortgaged the club in a gamble around keeping wilf here and trying to build something around him. It failed unfortunately.
