Now I will, by force of habit, repeat my current mantra of hang every politician in our current farce of a system, irrelevant of whatever rosette they hide behind but we live in a country ripped to bits by the Conservatives. We have a Tory government who can literally do whatever they want given the size of their majority. They choose to do nothing. Accept that and a whole new world view opens up. This Lab/Con dichotomy is the current root of what is so wrong about the UK. No longer Blue. And never Red. I think so too, and probably for different reasons brexit etc. At the end of the day, particularly after Truss, what control do we actually have, we have to borrow ever more and therefore have to satisfy lenders i.e. 'markets'.

I suppose because she is so thick. Ask any farmer what they think of her performance at the NFU conference. Rudeness personified. Including to Minette Batters. They don’t come much sharper than Minette.
Benefit sanctions slow down claimants’ progress into work and are likely to force them into taking lower-paying jobs that leave them hundreds of pounds a year worse off, according to an internal report that the government tried to suppress. The DWP report apparently finds that benefit sanctions do not lead to people working longer hours or getting back to work.

But he is right. This is the point. The Tories have reneged on promise after promise. The thing is with Steeleye's posts is that they are all, more or less, crypto-communist propaganda. Remember this is the guy who praised Robert Mugabe to the skies - would be interesting to hear his take on the likes of Pol Pot.

What do you think of Pol Pots's philosophy and policies?

And I suspect that many on the Progressive Left, with their obsession with the utter genocidal lunacy that is 'Net Zero' would love to see the population returned to a basic peasantry, living off the land, once more. Also thought they will no doubt stick with the Mao T-Shirts rather than the Pol Pot ones. Because essentially the modern Left are all about cultural revolutions.

If people still think we have a shred of democratic credibility in our system after that farce, then they must be moronic beyond comprehension.

Ministers have begun a full-scale retreat over post-Brexit plans to ditch thousands of EU laws by the end of this year, after Tory peers warned they would join a mass cross-party revolt in the House of Lords. The Observer can reveal that the government has dropped plans to hold the report stage of the Brexiters’ retained EU law bill in the Lords soon after Easter, apparently to prevent a row in the run-up to the local elections on 4 May and to allow it time to consider a list of likely concessions to rebels.

The DWP report apparently finds that benefit sanctions do not lead to people working longer hours or getting back to work. I’m with you in this steely. When someone comes off benefits to work they will likely pay tax so putting back in the system. I cannot understand how they use a one size fits all method. To get inspired to work you must be in a better financial position at the end of the month. Maybe they need a method to see the take home pay then add say 25% of additions from benefits. Including any council tax/ rent benefits travel to work etc. the sums will invariably be hard at first but any pound not given out is a saving for hmg. The person will then realise that they are in a better position and be inspired to carry on working. An annual review can take place and slowly by small amounts the hmg contribution can reduce until the person may be self sufficient and not require any or even a tiny bit of help. This isn’t a left or right thing it’s just common sense. Who in their right mind would enhance their social stature and be out of pocket ? Tbh I don’t know how they could do this but it needs a starting point.
