This. Only Spain have been consistently excellent and have illuminated an otherwise OK tournament. However, (words that I may have to swallow) the beautiful team rarely wins the prize. They are usually beaten by a duller more cynical side . Except when Spain won the 2008 and 2012 Euros and the 2010 World Cup, they were clearly a great side, but you are right in general. Many a tournament has been won by a more workman like with tournament nouce team, also riding their luck along the way

Where we didn't get past the QF. Let's stop beating about the bush. This debate is not about selection or tactics per se. It is broader. It is about results v entertainment. I hate what I see (and may be wavering on my first ever prediction of an England win, partly due to the weakness at the back where all eventual winners are strong). But if we win the tournament "ugly", you will not remember how we got there past your hangover. that's quibbling, Kane missed a penalty, we were the equal of a top class French side, Bellingham played deep, Foden and Saka linked up beautifully v Senegal who are the equal of any of the sides we have played so far. It's not flair versus effectiveness, we have lost both qualities bcos Southgate, for whatever reason, has lost the ability to organise the team. We don't need a cavalier or defensive approach, we need players to know what their jobs are and those jobs to be the right jobs, the flair and the effectiveness follow from that basis, it's not a choice between an attacking or defensive approach.

Austria v Turkey. What a cracking game and even at 2-0 Turkey never sat back.

Did anyone else notice that after taking a one goal lead the Netherlands continued attacking right to the end of the game? Gareth? Are you paying attention Gareth? They also attacked at pace throughout the game. Gareth? You're not listening Gareth...

There seems a thought (if people bother to give any) that my view is supportive of the tactics. Actually, I find the change in form and substance to be inexplicable so I have tried to explain it. We were the better than France in that game and would have gone on to beat them in extra time had the pen gone in. However, I am not sure we would have beaten Argentina (despite me saying otherwise on other threads). They snuck into yet another final under the radar (losing their first group game to the Saudis) and seemed to have so much more left in them than the French who looked spent. My only theory is that is what Southgate is seeking to avoid.

Austria v Turkey. What a cracking game and even at 2-0 Turkey never sat back. I would have seen it a little differently. If playing with two defence-lines in front of the penalty area like Turkey in the lead is not "sitting back", then I don't know. But it's not enough to just keep trying to attack with great team spirit, as Austria did in my opinion most of the time. You also need quality players and some ideas, which both Austria certainly didn't have yesterday. And if you then concede two goals from two corners into the goal area, then you're where Austria are today - on the way home.

So not only are we the most represented club in the England squad, it looks like Southgate is rumoured to be adopting our 3421 formation. I can see why, with Guehi out and not being able to get the best out of foden and bellingham, it makes sense, especially with palmer on the bench. I'm guessing he will play trent right and saka left which is about as good as it gets. Shaw is not fit, trippier can't even play lb let alone lwb, there's rumours he might even play eze on the left, for his sake I hope not. Whatever the team and formation I have very little expectations for Saturday anyway.
