Parish won't have been happy with some of the performances this season and the state of the squad demands significant change, but Roy has been a victim of circumstance, if he was given the funds to build a squad as good as the one he took over from (Cabaye and Loftus Cheek in midfield) we'd no doubt get a lot more of the performances we saw away at Everton and a lot less of the defensive dross we've witnessed when an unbalanced, ageing squad has been ravaged by injuries. Having said that a squad rebuild is not that feasible in the hands of a 73 year old and would be better in the hands of someone who has the time to see the project through. Brighty and Morrison know what's going on, and Clinton has has said the club are looking to make a change - if Roy stays it would only be for one more year and our targets might not be available then. If Howe rejects Celtic I can see him coming here, Dyche is not far behind - I can't see Parish taking a punt on Steve Cooper (whose tactics are widely criticised by Swansea fans) or the temperamental Portuguese. If the first two are not available then I can see Roy getting another year, but I don't think he'd be replaced by the other two. We may try and do a Southampton and find an obscure foreign gem, but we tried it once and failed miserably.

Makes me wonder what questions they asked the bloke at interview? Did they ask him to explain how he would use the (then current) squad? FDB apparently told a few of them he didn't want them before they had even kicked a ball for him. Did Parish and Freedman know he would do that? Whoever gets the job next will surely be asked to set out how they will use what we have to best effect. Edited by TheBigToePunt (07 Apr 2021 2.34pm)

Parish has publicly stated that FdB was a real gentleman and a nice guy and it was just a case of they quickly realised he was not the right fit at that time. Parish could have been lying, but he said this long after he left so I see no reason why he would say that. One pundit (Leon Osman) made the obvious point the other night when he said that if Palace are focusing on developing the squad for the future then that takes four or five years and you don't employ a 73-year-old man to oversee that realistically. I think he'll go as we haven't heard any positive noises to suggest otherwise from the club or the manager, and Roy's demeanour increasingly whiffs of one who is heading to the gallows (and perhaps thinks it somewhat unfair).

There's been rumours in the Bournemouth area for a few weeks now that Howe to Palace next season is done. Don't know if anyone else has heard this.

but the Celtic noises are saying it's a case of 'when' rather than 'if' he takes over up there ... a statement was due and it's turned out to be a fudge so Howe could still be coming to us, though there aren't many experienced candidates lining up for the Celtic job, Howe is well out in front.

I don't get this idea of a 'squad for the future'. We might need, or want, a younger squad, than we've currently got, but it has to be good enough to win games straight away or we get relegated. In that sense I see no reason why Roy can't coach a younger squad next season, and someone else takes over the year after, or whenever Roy does retire.

Roy doesn't do playing youth on a consistant basis. I hope Roy Goes if i'm honest.

I think the rebuild thing is bcos the squad doesn't just need a tweak here or there, we need at least one decent central defender under the age of 30, two central midfielders (all pairings from the two Macs, Luka and Jairo aren't really much cop), and very probably a replacement for Zaha and an upgrade on Townsend - it's not just incremental change but a clear picture of what the squad needs and the best direction for it to go in, a bit of vision in other words. It will take more than one window to sort it out and Roy might be a short-term option but he's not a long-term option, and the squad is at a bit of a a crossroads.
