Whilst I think Austin is overprIced, I would prefer to spend the money on him than some of the others mentioned. Hopefully we can get rid of some of the deadwood in part ex.

Then you have those who have given service to the club but not up to it, Paddy being the main one, again no place in the squad, time for him to go. Mariappa may have a future I don't know but in my opinion Pards doesn't see him as part of the squad. So again another one to go. What do you suggest? We keep them just because we signed them? We have to upgrade the squad every year, that means that a lot of fans favourites will be gone over the next couple of seasons. Always a sad time when that happens, Murray is likely to be gone next summer. However, Jules, Murray & Paddy are very different to Bannan, Guediora and to a lesser degree Mariappa.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Charlie Austin (rumour)' by james03 As I see it Bannan, Guediora, Mariappa and Campbell won't get much gametime this sason. They will at QPR. So to sell them or as makeshifts to get Austin is a nobrainer.

I think it's a question of whether you take "deadwood" as being pejorative or just literal. If the latter, which is probably the way it was intended, what's the problem? Those players do, in an objective sense, fit the description. "Deadwood" simply means taking up space and not useful which the evidence to date suggests is true. Had he said, say, "crap" instead of "deadwood" that WOULD have been offensive. In reality, refreshing the bit-part players is just as important as signing new starters. From 1-25 in the squad, you always want to improve everywhere so it's really not a case of it being a positive to transfer, say, numbers 22-24 in the squad (in terms of quality, not squad numbers) for someone in the first 11 if you can't replace those players with someone better. If you get one improved starter but at a cost of weakening your depth by losing three players on the bench then you may be a bit ahead, but less than you might have hoped. With regard to the players named, unfortunately (or fortunately) managers have their favourites whether we like it or not. Bannan, in my view, is simply too lightweight (and I don't mean "small" ) to impose himself on games . He shows glimpses and has attributes, but he's simply not quite good enough. With Cabaye and Mutch providing upgraded passing options as well as McJedley and our various wingers, I can't see that we really need him in any role, depth let alone starting. He is deadwood. Guediora is the one I will never understand. Good player who in my view will do well whether he stays in the Premiership or goes to the Championship. But clearly Pards thinks otherwise, as have three managers before him. Deadwood, but our choice because I don't think he should be. Mariappa I think is valuable and I would be reluctant to sell him. His versatility across the back line is useful to have around; both Hunt and Fryers, who might have taken his place in the squad appear to have been abject failures thus far, and while he is no Premiership starter on a regular basis, he's a good class of squad player. Not deadwood at all but, actually, possibly a quite desirable asset to the right club. Paddy is, unfortunately, deadwood. It's not entirely clear to me why he's still around and I suspect it may be Parish's class as a supporter as well as owner that prevents the termination (buyout) of his contract. Given all he's lead the club through, perhaps we're just treating him with respect at this point, even though we have little use for him in the first team. Murray is anything but deadwood and to suggest otherwise is laughable. He played plenty of minutes and scored goals regularly enough last season. If he's sold, it will simply be because someone offers him something more attractive in playing terms than the squad role he's likely to have with us. Personally, I'd hate to lose him and if we do I'd want 5 million at least. As a third or fourth choice forward, it'd be almost impossible to find an equal replacement, let alone a better one.

Something I've been saying to friends since this transfer season began is that of all the strikers we've been linked with, Austin would be the shrewdest investment. Even more so if we can get some bodies off the wage bill as a part of the deal. He is English and if he can replicate or exceed last season in a better team then the bigger teams will be interested and suddenly our £15m investment (or whatever) will be £30m+ return. I imagine the big four want to wait another season to see if Austin is the real deal. QPR will know this and after their windfall from the Sterling deal you can bet any deal will have a decent sell on clause in it. While I don't like the idea of us selling good players after one season I much prefer that to us losing money on a "marquee signing" from abroad who doesn't settle at all. Having said all that he could be a flop, however I imagine a Championship Club will still pay £5m-£7m for his services given his pedigree at that level. Overall, if he comes and scores 10 goals we'll not have lost money, any more goals than that and we're getting a return.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Charlie Austin (rumour)' by james03 I don't want Austen, especially not for £15m. Dodgy knee and only one decent season in the prem. QPR can keep him.
