The media "outrage" has been every bit as fierce as if it had been a Republican!. For instance, it's the lead story in the BBC's Us & Canada's section. If you read the transcript of what he said and see it in the context of the interview as a reaction from some goading from the interviewer then it doesn't seem too bad. It was more a comparison of how Trump might have responded to the questioning than anything else. It's when you take it out of context that it can be made to sound bad. As ever Candace Owens nails it: "A Democrat candidate with the courage to look black people in the face and tell us what they really think, which is 'don’t ask questions, and vote for me because you are black'. Can we all just take a moment to pause and consider the media reaction if @realdonaldtrump said this to a black person that asked him about his policies? Or if Trump said 'ain’t' as opposed to to 'are not', simply because he was speaking to a black man. Does @cthagod not understand English? Can anybody find a clip of @joebiden saying 'ain’t' when speaking to a white man? This is plantation-politics at its finest. I’m not outraged or upset, because this clip is everything I’ve been screaming about for the last 3 years; Democrats view black people as trained chimpanzees who should perform the same circus act at the polls every 4 years to empower wealthy white liberals. Quite frankly, if you are black and you can’t see that by now, then maybe 'you ain’t smart' Been honored these last 3 years to have spent considerable time with POTUS and his entire immediate family. Never, not once, has any one of them ever spoken to me in broken English. They speak to me how they speak to every single person that they encounter, no matter what skin color." Increasingly convinced that come November, Biden will not be the one standing against Trump. His complete unsuitability for an election campaign is becoming more apparent by the day. The Democrats clearly have a candidate lined up that they cannot get through the normal primary process. Biden will be diagnosed with an illness and they will parachute this person in. Michelle Obama? If it happens it is as democratic as when May and Brown got the top jobs.

Genuinely do not know. Done some research (and yes I am that sad) into how the Democrats could pull such a stunt and there does appear to be a way. Key to it could be who Biden names as his VP running candidate. But it is all rather murky at the moment. Many on the Left in the US are pulling their hair out about Biden because he clearly has issues and this latest faux-pas plays right into Trumps hands. It is not neccessarily about his words driving African-Americans into voting for Trump but rather about discouraging them to vote at all. I genuinely cannot see him being in the frame come November. I could well be wrong and the polling in the US does have him beating Trump but then again the same was said about Hillary. And still don't rule her out.

Apart from his pervy habits of touching people and sniffing their hair and falling asleep, he would have been electable. He is not as extreme as Bernie and is relatable to the key voting blocks of the rust belt. He may well come a cropper with some corruption involving his son Hunter. If you don't know about this, then it illustrates the UK media has been ignoring it. I feel sorry for Joe because he is clearly losing his faculties. I think the US is currently a lot more brittle than people realise and a stunt like that... That is not to say the Clintons would not be involved in what plays out but she would be too divisive. I suspect they would go with an African-American but somebody deemed to be unifying because they would need to deal with the legitimacy question in terms of the election itself.

The idea that the Democrats have "moved to the left", as suggested in a recent post here, always amuses me. It's something I have debated with my American friends for many years whose idea of what is "left" is far, far removed from what most of us recognise here. It seems to me that, in general, mainstream public opinion in the USA is slowly becoming a little more liberal whilst the margins are hardening, especially on the right. The Democrats simply reflect those changes. They have rejected the candidates thought to be more on their margin but if you consider the policies they were actually proposing you would see that many were already firmly established and accepted in the UK, and indeed much of the developed world. Hardly of the left at all. We have been dominated by Tory-led governments for the majority of my life but not one has ever proposed overturning the concept of universal health care paid for via taxation that is so contentious in the USA. So is it really "moving to the left" to advocate for this? Or is it just advocating joining the modern developed world? Trump has dragged the USA backwards in so many ways but I sense the tide turning against him now, except on the really distant margins. Even Fox is beginning to distance itself. Trump is definitely a reaction to something but it isn't about any kind of real leftward move by the Democrats. We can though speculate on what else it might be. My own thoughts are it's a sign of the increasingly wide divide between those in the USA, predominately in the eastern states and on the coasts, who want their country to move forward and become a modern liberal democracy, and those in the centre and south who reject such ideas want to move backwards. The alt right being part of the second group.

Thanks for making my point. It would have been in the UK front page, not a regional section. Like the daily Brett Kavanaugh hearings were... Goading? Obviously you know nothing about Charlamagne. The interviewer is a staunch Democrat and would never vote for Trump or any Republican. Edited by Penge Eagle (23 May 2020 1.25pm) I very much doubt that. They have rather more important local priorities at the moment, which weren't around during the Kavanaugh hearings. I have read the profile of the interviewer and yes, it might have been tongue in cheek goading but this is a big nothing. Except in the political point-scoring game.

The issue with Trump is not that he won because of the Democrats moved to the left but rather there has been, and accross both sides of the mainstream political compass, a move to ever increasing globalisation. That was the back-lash that saw Trump win because a lot of people, more in terms of a gut-feeling than an ability to rationally articulate it, decided enough was enough. Ditto with Brexit. Trump represented a chance to stop the slide. I suspect the powers driving the wider agenda merely see him as a blip but I also fear this is all going to end in a serious amount of bloodshed. And perhaps you are not best placed to talk about 'democracy' given how you would have happily cheered on the June 2016 referendum vote being brushed to one side.

If you could be bothered to read back through my posts I was suggesting this possibility quite a few weeks ago. I think the DMC see getting rid of Trump as the overwhelming priority and have called what amounts to a national emergency to achieve it. They knew that if Sanders stood the floating voters would not be so likely to vote for him so managed to kick him off. They also know Biden won't do well in one to one TV debates but for the time being he can hold the line. Then he will get sick or have some other reason to be forced to withdraw. Who is chosen as VP now becomes vital as they would be the obvious replacement. I am pretty sure it won't be Hillary. Too much baggage! Don't think it will be Michelle Obama either. Her lack of public office experience would be exploited. I do though think it will be a woman. Amy Klobuchar looks like the most likely to me, and is now undergoing vetting. However, don't write off Kamala Harris. She is young, smart and has another obvious appeal.

Most of the developed world has a modern liberal democracy. We do. The bs over globalisation is responsible for a lot, on that I can certainly agree. It has been exploited by both the left and the right to justify their own positions, but particularly so by the populists. And it is complete bs but maybe this is not the thread to debate why. You ought not fear what you cannot change. You need to embrace it and make it work for you. Obviously I hope there isn't blood shed over this but I acknowledge how tricky it is going to be to manage. I have enough contact with my American friends to know how entrenched their opinions are, how blind to reason but how flimsy their arguments are. One guy yesterday told me that, despite all the evidence I gave him to the contrary, he still believed 95% of everything Alex Jones says. My objections to Brexit were 100% based on the fundamental democratic principals which exist in the UK, despite all the baloney to the contrary. Referendums are not part of our system and when there is evidence, as there undoubtedly was, that the result was manipulated by outside interference (as the unpublished report by our security forces will no doubt confirm) then they really ought not be trusted. Parliament is the ONLY place in which true trust in our democracy can be vested.
