I think the kind of people who approve of a role for capital punishment don't tend to be the 'activist' types and that's very much an 'activist' type website.

Morally I am not against capital punishment but those for it need to be honest it's not justice it's judicial revenge. I don't believe it prevents crime it does save the taxpayer money.

Who decides if it is a capital case?
Is this up to a jury?
If capital cases are for say the murder of a policemen then it becomes like a hate crime. Justice is not equal because there are special victims e.g. kill a cancer nurse you get life kill a copper you get the noose.

So I would need to see the practical steps as to how it would work but if reasonable I would be okay with it.

However I would prefer tougher sentences like most people.

I think that type of Tory party went in the sixties.

They slowly moved towards the left's social policies possibly due to greater female involvement.....and in the last ten years it's been a sprint and needs radical reversing.

Sorry pressed post before I had written....doh

I am against capital punishment only because of the very rare occasion when they might get their decision wrong. However I am a fan of hard labour and believe that all lifers should earn their keep in full by working on the roads, train lines or other capital projects. Sitting on your arse watching tv is not really punishment.

Bring back the chain gangs

Seriously though I have always liked the idea of proper community service but one of the major problems is that free labour will increase unemployment

The judge would decide.

Free prisoner labour can be used to perform the tasks that the marketplace is reluctant to financially justify. Any public sector work for example. Tending the flowerbeds in the Parks, sweeping the streets, painting public buildings.

Prisoners who are not physically healthy enough to do manual work should be given data-entry type jobs.

all good for the taxpayer.

They could produce free electricity by riding bikes with dynamos. An initiative brought to you by the Green Party and Extinction Rebellion.

I've produced electricity riding a few bikes in my time.

Wasn't much help to the national grid though.

In terms of putting prisoners to work......I would have thought it best to direct it towards charities.....though obviously all this has been considered and implemented many many decades ago.
