Wouldn't his attitude have been the same as any slave owning person? Such as Washington and the Founding Fathers. They treated these people as a commodity so any trying to escape would have been treated harshly. Splitting up families would have been seen as a punishment and a way of increasing work from the slaves. They certainly wouldn't have wanted the slaves freed so any talk of such things would have been frowned upon and punished. I don't really see Lee as being any worse than any other person that owned slaves. The whole issue of keeping slaves is disgusting and is today rightly condemned. Not so back then. Which is precisely why it is entirely legitimate IMHO for people in the US to want to remove statues largely built as symbols in the Jim Crow era to honour racism and white supremisists (as opposed to statues of Lincoln and Washington which were not erected for such purpose.

Sorry I strongly disagree. My suggestion would be to put up a statue of, for instance, Rosa Parks, right next to the statue, perhaps making it bigger. Show that the South has progressed.

Of course slavery of black people was evil. But it happened, rearranging statues etc won't change that. Slavery in the forced labour camps of communist countries happened and is do doubt still happening in North Korea. The Lee thing is actually more about the new crypto-communists baiting the right - they actually want the far right to react so that they can come on all self-righteous and 'fight fascism'. The fact that they use the fascist tactics of attacking historical artefacts, banning books and speakers that disagree with their rigid dogmas should alarm all impartial people.
We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell] |

Its all a conspiracy of the far left... There is nothing self righteous about opposing the far right, neo-Nazism and Fascism, nor is there anything specifically very left wing about it. Its what normal people should do.

Its what normal people should do. A conspiracy implies an organised plan. The work of the left in the media isn't a conspiracy but it is deliberately focused towards their biases. This is also true of the right wing media. But when it comes to broadcast media the left hold nearly all the cards.....and this kind of political monopoly isn't ok....especially since some of it is funded via the public taxpayer's purse. I have no issues with people opposing the far right....going around looking for 'Trump' supporters to beat up I very much do have an issue with. What I do have a problem with is deliberate mis-characterisation of what 'far right' is. What I do have a problem with is deliberate non or under reporting of events that don't support your narrative yet hyper focus and analysis of events that do. You have media that lies deliberately, media that sometimes misleads unintentionally and then you have no media. It's even with the BBC....which I use to defend but of which I am now a fierce critic. In terms of Antifa, yep I agree.

There is a big gap between Antifa, other far left groups and 'normal people' just like there is a big difference between neo nazis and normal people with concerns about disproportionate criminality, over population and multi culturalism.

What 'far right'? They are tiny in number and have always been there. As for their 'rise', until the 'rise' of identity politics on the left there was a reduction in their size decade upon decade. Identity politics from one side creates the rise in its opposite.
