I think Blair and Livingstone have been very good at handling this.

Finally reached my cousin who works at the Polish embassy and thank god shes fine. Said they recieved no warning whatsoever about possible attacks this morning (often they get private security alerts that are not released to the public - but not this time) so I'm not sure why the Israeli's would have recieved some prior warning if indeed they did. She works as one of the aides to the ambassador and apparently he's been told unofficialy that the death toll will rise significantly Edited by Kosowski (07 Jul 2005 9:29pm)

I also feel sorry for the abuse that the Arabs will be receiving for a minority of their religion behaving like muppets. I say kill the Terrorists by paper cutting them to death!

Giovanni. Because these people are so scattered, I can't see the UK unilaterally going out to bomb some indeterminate country as 'revenge' for this. As you rightly say, it is virtually impossible to strike at their core, for the simple reason that there isn't one. You're also right in that we don't have any specific knowledge about Al Q'aeda other than the statements that they've made vowing to destroy the West. In fact, we don't even know if Al Q'aeda even exists in the same form that it did on 9/11. We have to go on what we know. What we know is that these people are fanatics whose beliefs are far, far outside our range of understanding and are seen as pariahs even by most (but probably not all) Arab governments. Faced with this 'invisibility', we are obliged to work with other countries in order to locate them and deal with them and, if necessary, encourage regime change in countries that openly and practically support them and their aims (such as in Afghanistan). Their fundamentalism will not permit them to deal with the West in any shape or form other than by attack. The onward march of fundamentalism is therefore the real problem here. By permitting fundamentalist activity in this country, we are effectively leaving our door wide open to terrorist attack, as other Western countries are, in their attempts to be 'tolerant'. Unfortunately, it is this very tolerance towards an ideology whose only objective is to destroy us that is our downfall. I can't even imagine what could be done to halt islamic fundamentalism and I fear what is yet to come - I suspect that events like today and 9/11 will pale into insignificance. We have no idea how many others are here, and nor do other countries know how many 'sleepers' they are harbouring. Asking about whether we'd kill them or not if caught is really beside the point - their value of human life, including their own, is evidently very little. We have to be increasingly vigilant and possibly surrender some of our much-cherished 'rights' in order to even begin to combat it (ID cards, here we come). And even then, that won't stop it. It's a very depressing thought.

Also our transport service may be s*** but to have the busses NEAR back to full service and the trains making their way to full service by tomorrow hopefully is a big acheivment.

This was posted on another Board i frequent. Not too sure what to think of it.
FROM UBA Hello there, I am from the UBA (United British Alliance), a non-racist organisation. We are planning a demonstration in London on July 23rd, where we will march UNITED as patriotic British people. We have been successful last year in stopping Muslim rallies held by Omar Bakri, we were given permission to lay a wreath at the 9/11 memorial on behalf of British people which was conducted impeccably and solemnly, and we marched alongside British Sikhs amongst many others who oppose the threat of terrorism. We are patriots not racists. We care for all those who are British and have Britain's interests at heart. I thank you for your time and hope that you can take a look at our website and join us in our demonstration. We must put pressure on the government to rid our shores of terror.

The people who carried out the attacks today will most likely have been in the county a while. They may even be legitimate British nationals, with passports rather than papers, and it is not beyond the realms of fantasy to say there is a possibility of them having British parents. Bin Laden studied in England and was an Arsenal fan...he used to go to Highbury and cheer the Gooners on. Do you think there was anything that could have been done to prevent him from formulating his ideas and establishing the principles that would one day lead to suffering and shame? I'm the kind of person that likes to concentrate on the positives. I'm proud of being English but I'm also proud that my country is the second most diverse, tolerant and multicultural place I know. It is a fine line between keeping it that way and letting it slip, but if we carry on being vigilant we will be okay. Not to say there is not a serious problem, but it is something to be conscious of rather than hysterical about. You always get more done when you have composure on your side.

The only way to really stop terrorists is to stop their flow of cash. With no money they cannot function and somehow they are being supported. We cannot fight an invisible enemy. These people could be anyone, please dont jump to conclusions that they are immigrants. For all we know, they could be our neighbours, the people we bump into in the local shop, or sit on the next table to when we have a drink in the pub - perfectly ordinary looking people, and that in itself is what makes them so dangerous - a horrible thought i know. So closing the doors i think will be pointless. I think that after today, everyone will know someone, or knows of someone who has been affected by today in one way or another. This is not the time to start a civil/racial war amongst ourselves , but we all need to pull together to find those responsible and to report anything we think is ood or suspicious about anyone - black, white, asian, men, women, old or young. Dont think that someone else will do it because everyone else might think the same thing..... I have faith that the intelligence agencies will find out who is responsible and try to cut off their finance - however, that in itself may open up a whole new can of worms.
