The main problem with England is playing a very wide system with a formation more suited to playing narrow. Add in to that the lack of basic wide players except for Saka and the lack of a wide left back and the problem is exacerbated. Add to that the unsuitable Tiki taka approach and it's clear the whole set up is wrong.

Rice wasn't the issue yesterday - in fact he Was one of our better players.. for a change. the problem yesterday was lack of movement and lack of energy and understanding in attack. The many sideways and backwards passing was due to lack of forward passing options. Intelligent dovetailing runs, people driving forward are what's needed. Whartons not a golden bullet. He'll exploit and encourage better than Rice, but needs more of a change in personnel than just him to fix this.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

IMO some is due to lack of movement, but equally to blame is the dawdling on the ball in CM. 3,4,5 touches mean that the attacking runs are missed, or when the ball is played the attacked has lost that half yard of space.

I think the dawdling on the ball is largely due to the lack of movement. Whatever central idea is underlying the organisation of the team is clearly flawed. We knocked it around with for the first half hour v Serbia, but it's been disjointed ever since. There's the left side weakness combined with Foden and Bellingham being unable to adapt their positioning and the manager being the only person on the planet who can't sse it. Roy Keane made a great point about Austria, Swtizerland, Demark and Slovakia - they play like men. There are a lot of gnarled blokes aboutr 30, not 20, who play a bit like Lerma does for us, roll their sleeves up, combine and work it out together. When the Slovaks played out under pressure the angles of their one-touch passing and the movement of the players receiving the ball meant the English players were wrong footed, and they escaped the press by combing cleverly together. Our players don't look smart enough or humble enough to do that most often, but the main reason for this failure is the players are not in the best position because they have been incorrectly set up, and they are failing as a team to adjust.

England and Belgium both played Slovakia. Belgium are ranked above us and have beaten us. They lost, we did not. England and Portugal both played Slovenia. Portugal are ranked just below us and have a good record against us and have a decent competition pedigree. We drew (and intended to). Portugal scraped past them on penalties AET when they did everything they could to win. Yet only England are cr@p? Like it or not, smaller teams (i.e. the only ones we have played so far) have spent months working out how to beat us; and it cannot be done with open flowing football. As for us, we met their low block parked bus with our own brand of uninspiring anti-football. However, we have to be - at least early on - as we enter every tournament with a handicap.

Its not only England are cr@p. A lot of teams are, and a lot have bad games/poor results. The stark difference for me is intent. Whilst Portugal weren't amazing last night, they gave it a go. Stuck a load of crosses in, created some chances etc. Instead of sitting back, they spent the majority of the game in the Slovenia half. Without Oblack (who was outstanding) they might have won relatively comfortably. In most of England's games the oppo need not even have a keeper with the number of efforts we register on target.

You're right, but the trade off is they gave away a lot more chances than we did against Slovenia, and generally they looked more exposed defensively - Sesko should really score that late chance yesterday and it's a very different conversation if he does. From an entertainment point of view, I agree they are at least trying to create, but with my pragmatic hat on... we are generally much tougher to break down.

The FA had another golden generation on their hands and the morons gave them to Southgate. Sweet FA as usual.

I don't think there would be any of the vitriol aimed at England had we played Slovenia like the portuguese did. Loads of opportunities created, incisive runs ending in Wasteful finishing. theirs and our performances are uncomparable. Portugal have got a Large problem in the shape of a Ronaldo. Undroppable for them, but underperforming. now that is comparable.
