Suspect that our players look at what happened to Zaha, who apparently had a gentleman’s agreement etc. If it were me I’d rather control my own future and that means insisting on a release clause.

Some clubs on the continent are putting release clauses of £150 million on talented youngsters to keep predators out of the way.
It is probably less easy to do when the youngsters have already made a name for themselves, but you could see the attraction for clubs like Palace to stop this incessant speculation every few months.
For example, Wharton only signed a few months ago and looks to gave a great future.
If release clauses are now so much part of the game let's put prohibitive release provision clauses in contracts like they do on the continent so we don't sell players like Olise so far below market value if a situation arises where a sale is to be made.

Two years ago there were several with €1 bn release clauses. Now Bellingham has the same and probably some others.

Needless to say that it requires the player to agree to that condition.

Suspect we wouldn't have been able to sign Olise without agreeing to put in a modest clause

On his recent contract, I agree it may well have been difficult.
But not on his initial contract.
It protects the club's interests if the player turn into a superstar and at stage the balance of negotiating power is certainly on the club's side.

My take is that both Olise and Eze would only sign new contracts provided a release clause was included. If the club had not done so then it's possible that both players ( Olise certainly ) would have already left the club.

Agree that the amount of the release clause seems heavily weighted in favour of the players in these cases. Olise is certainly worth far more than Palace are receiving for him.

In terms of Caceido and Cucerella, my understanding was that Caceido didn't have a fee attached to his release clause and Cucurella didn't have one at all. But it seems ridiculous that Brighton were able to extract those sums for those players.

Unfortunately we missed out last year on the absolute stupidity of the new Chelsea management who had a billion to waste in an attempt to buy success.

It was Brighton’s good fortune that there was a mug around the corner at just the right time to be fleeced!

Regardless of clauses etc. - once the clause has been triggered I suspect that it is up to the player who he joins.
I.E - if Man Utd had offered £100m but Olise wanted to join Bayern for £60m - the release amount - then I guess that he is free to do so.

It would depend upon the wording of the clause, but I think this is broadly correct.
It reinforces that these provisions are more likely to be in the player's interest.
It would be preferable to have a minimum value e.g offers over £60 million so that in your example Bayern have to match Man Utd's offer to take Olise.

At the end of the day this guy is a professional sportsman and fully understands football’s loyalty having been kicked out of the Chelsea and was it Arsenal’s academy.
He has engineered the ability to move and if the press are to be believed is making a move which gives him the ability to perform at the highest level in Germany for an iconic club and play Champions League football this year whilst getting a huge salary increase and a slice of the transfer fee.
Well good luck to him, I have loved watching him play…just disappointed his last year was ruined by injuries. At least he won’t be playing against us in the Premier League.
As disappointing as this is, at least it will offer encouragement for other developing players to join us.

f***ing Bayern. Trying to nick our manager, Wharton and now they've actually taken Olise. It was bad enough when West Ham were signing everyone we were linked with, now we have this.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...
