And he was right....but he didn't argue for bans.

Also, no doubt, he didn't object to advertising for his books.

Technology will eventually solve the issues with mass advertising. Though in of itself that promotes smaller and smaller exposures to the outside world.

That is its own problem itself.

I like a lot of Orwell's stuff.

However, Cyril Connolly, wrote of Orwell, 'He couldn't blow his nose without moralising on the conditions of the handkerchief industry'....which is fair enough criticism.

But we can all be validly criticised and in general, I regard Orwell as an important figure.

Also, the idea that restricting an individual's view of society as a form of treatment is not only ridiculous but it is harmful. It is lying to them about human nature. It is using the repression of others as a 'justifiable' tool.

So if attractive slim women are to be banned in advertising then what about them walking down the street? Are they to be banned on TV? What about women wearing short skirts and tops?

So how are people with eating disorders to be protected from that?

All you are doing is restricting the liberties of others to fit in with a form of treatment that cannot work......Oh and in the mealtime supporting those who desire social conservatism: well done to you.

Oh and by the way...if you find any of these women or men attractive...I don't know your preferences...then you yourself are apart of what you trying to restrict and dare I say it a hypocrite.

I'm inclined to agree, issues such as eating disorders and relation to body image do have a relationship, and I think this is a 'conversation' society needs to have, but the idea of banning x because it has a correlation to y is a) not going to resolve the issue of eating disorders and b) only going to result in further problems (because you can find correlations everywhere).

I think the promotion of ideal body shapes does impact disoders like Anorexia, but these are more complicated than just a casual link to artificial constructions of beauty, and also have far deeper factors involved around identity (Primarily in self perception, as anorexics do see themselves as fat to a pathological delusional level).

I do agree though that restriction on advertising that is harmful to society should be applied (as we have done this already with smoking and alcohol), but that restriction in terms of 'body image' is maybe too vague and relates to a far wider issue within fashion and modelling industry that is restricted to a very unreasonable body type (esp the fashion industry).

What strikes me as odd, is how many of these 'attractive women in their underwear' adverts are selling stuff to women, rather than me.

Nature of writers I suspect. Its the kind of profession that leads people down obsessive paths - Its a odd life, effectively spending your life typing about life, whilst others are living it (to paraphrase Brett Easton Ellis on writing Rules of Attraction and his rather tame experiences at University).

I think a society that allows, nay even promotes self reflection and criticism is a healthy one. Every worldview needs to stick its chin out and take blows and argue its corner from any other worldview.

When we see writers being restricted or banned we know that a society is repressing its own people.

With men it's different things. They sell to the highest interest areas I suppose. We all fit some and not others.

For me...I was never into the car thing.....Not into the alcohol thing either.....the variety of life....as we know some men look at attractive women in underwear not because they want to get into the women, but because they want to get into the underwear.

Stop pushing 'snowflake culture' onto me. I reject it.

Please stop using that nonsense American term.

And for someone who rejects it you don't half seem to be offended by a lot of things with modern society. And spend a lot of time moaning about it on the internet.

What's wrong with it? Besides, these are both English words.

What am I offended by that I wish to ban? Offended isn't the right word anyway. Offended suggests that you reject its existence....annoyed is better.

I don't believe in banning non violent ideas.....not even your ridiculous progressive ones.....To butcher the old quote, I will defend your right to be ridiculous....Just not the right for it to be imposed onto the rest of us.

Really? And here's me laying on fact after fact in this thread about what it means to be a devout Catholic in order to help the less informed like yourself. How ungrateful.
