And it was Forage that said a 52/48 vote the other way would be "unfinished Business" so I dont think hindsight is the issu. It is just that large numbers on either side were never going to accept the vote No, a lot of the Remainers were so confident no one would vote to leave they kept all their petitions and protests and legal challenges for after the deed was done. Everyone went to the polling booth to vote in something that had been annotated "We will carry out what you decide", it wasn't just on the paperwork for the Brexiteers.

Didn't the Conservatives get in after promising a referendum? Yes. They did, and their party was clearly quite split over the outcome. I think a lot of this stems from the fact that people want to leave the EU, but don't really care too much about what that would entail. They just want out, now, and to hit the magic 'reset to 1970' button.

If we don't get hard Brexit, I see a massive protest vote by the 52% which could spell very bad news for Tory and Labour alike at the next election. That will come sooner if Parliament doesn't approve it.

Abuse isn't the same thing as debate. Other than the far right perhaps I don't recall anyone using the term "Traitor Heath" and guess what things evolved over the last 40 years or so. Thank god we didnt stay the same as 1972 when we were a complete basket case.

With regards to the single market and free movement it was apparent that the Europeans coming here weren't the real problem for some but more the possibility of darker-skinned refugees/migrants Muslims, etc, making their way over through the EU which is exactly why the right-wing media and Nigel presented their case as such. As it stood last year migration to the UK from African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries was pretty much the same as from the EU. That won't be changing much any time soon.

Didn't the Conservatives get in after promising a referendum? Yes but my point still stands. The most UKIP have ever had support wise for a poll is 24%. Which to me says 76% weren't so bothered about a referendum.

People voted for what the Brexit campaign promised. That for most was control of European immigration for one thing.
