England need to find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The way its going, you may have been very correct.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Lack-lustre England pull yourselves together. Stokes not bowling, Moeen not fit, Wood clearly has a problem. I thought Root nearly got through a couple of times, but the seamers have no zip. Let us pray.

Another day, and 2 quick wickets, 149-2. A bit more energy today.

We've lost (convincingly) despite the pitches being made for us, the Toss going nearly always in our favour and against an injury ravaged and frankly sub-par aussie side. For all the talk of how negative and unactive captain Pat Cummins has been, he's given England all the rope they need to hang themselves. Some truly appalling management/Captaincy decisions over all 5 tests from the England camp; the first test declaration, the lack or declaration in the 4th, the continuing presence of JA on reputation alone, to name but 3. I'd also like to mention how shockingly biased and hypocritical the BBC Coverage has been. So England-focused it's unreal with Glenn McGrath standing next to Michael Vaughn daring to put an Oz twist on events, and dismissed like a badly hit cover drive. Generally England have acted appaulingly over the course of this Ashes(and not just the Squad - remember the green room incident), and somehow I'm falling on the Aussie side. They've just got on with it. They've not played great, but they're going home with the Urn again with minimal fuss.

I get that the rankings have them top, but on par with previous aussie sides, I'm of the view that this one falls short of their usually high standards. Broad has been astonishing this series. Truely standout. Wood and Woakes - not even picked for the first test - been great too.

England have been pretty good in general in the series. As you say, no batting calamities as such. Probably Australia dropped as many catches as England - it happens. I expected better fielding from both sides.

We do seem to be wetting our pants about how exciting Bazball is, but ultimately 'boring' Australia have won, and that's what counts. I'm sure the Aussie fans weren't bored. We haven't lost 'convincingly' as we narrowly lost the first two. My view is that we've been marginally the better side throughout but have made some terrible captaincy decisions and failed at the crunch moments- I agree with your list and would add the short ball batting in the first innings at Lords and the failure to select Foakes. All we can hope is that Stokes has learned and that we are more ruthless when ahead in future. The Bairstow stumping was a shameful dismissal and deserved all the negativity it received, but it isn't was why we lost that match or series. Haven't been overly impressed with Stokes' interviews and seeming unwillingness to accept he made some poor calls. Bairstow's comments on pundits being 'out of order' to question his keeping were ridiculous given he's taking the spot of arguable the worlds best keeper. As you say, the Aussies haven't been at their best. Both Smith and Labuschagne have been off and they lost Lyon early on. It feels like we've thrown this one away and it stinks. We're close to be being very good but I worry about our bowlers now Broad has gone and Jimmy is over the hill. Wood and Robinson are good but both injury prone.

I do hope the learn from this, as this could be a Great period from England, if they apply their brains and a modicum of humility. You are right in your appraisal of the bowling attack. with Broad out, JA looking on the decline, no spinner on the horizon and no seamers either, we're looking rather thin.

Smith, Marsh, Head - bang bang bang 3 down. Aussies 109 to get, 4 wickets left.
