Those are indeed the facts, which nobody contests or, with the benefit of hindsight, defends. No doubt there are things happening today that in some years time will look to be indefensible. The important thing is not to rant over inevitable mistakes but whether the lessons available have been learned. The old Don't Look Back in Anger mantra.

We live in an era of failing upwards and insulated power. Whenever you hear someone blaming the system or the culture you know that they are obfuscating and you're not going to get justice.....systems and cultures are implemented by those at the top, the money power has names. The lack of accountability is perhaps a clue as to why nothing is actually done.....It means that those responsible are considered too powerful to be pointed at. However, how much Savile just fooled people I can't say....as a normie in the culture I was certainly fooled by him....watched Jim'll fix it, top of the pops and thought he was great.

I've been dipping into the Post Office hearings "nobody know nuffin about nuffin" What a shower, but they all knew what they had to do to get bonuses and gongs. One of the lawyers who is up to his armpits in this cesspit is still part of the process to decide who gets what compensation. You might as well ask Sir Alex Ferguson to referee a Man United game.

That's true but Stuart Hall wasn't that much of a star to have any particular power and he was up to some of the same tricks.

An excellent post that illustrates the frustration many of us feel.....so many slimeballs. What you need are honest people in charge of these systems to ensure that accountability is clear....Reward your leaders well, but that reward should be in line with where the buck stops. It's only when accountability is clear when systems get properly managed.

Money protects....Hall probably didn't have enough to frighten people. Having said that I'll make it clear that I'm no 'me too' person. The culture gets weaponsied against straight males....so I'm skeptical as well. Was what happened to Freddie Star really fair? Jim Davidson? I don't know....to my mind it should be about protecting the underage kids from peados but the activists and gold diggers are out there and always push that boat out further.

It's like knowing what horse is going to win. After the race. I never met Savile but he crossed my path as he befriended a family I bought a house from. The stories they told me felt odd at the time, but he was odd, and they expressed no concerns at all. They were proud of, almost honoured by, his attention. That I think was a repeated pattern which has taught a very profound lesson.

What he was doing, and was tacitly allowed to do, was still illegal. He did a lot of damage to the lives of a lot of people because the BBC were protecting a supposed asset.

I don't think that is true at all. No one allowed him to do anything, whether tacitly or not. He fooled many and, as has been recently pointed out here, threatened and bullied others. That he damaged many lives is unarguable but to suggest the BBC were "protecting an asset" whilst knowing what he was up to is not true. Some at lower levels had concerns and suspicions but no route to report them or get them investigated. Savile was very clever. He projected a persona which included being weird but also avuncular and well-meaning. As a consequence, he became untouchable.
