I would say that due to Scotland voting not to leave the UK (partially on account that they didn't want to leave Europe), it's definitely something that will factor into their thinking. I mean that's a truism really.

One potential problem of Scotland leaving, and the conservatives having their feet so firmly under the table going forward is that the government will be (even) less inclined to act in the public's interests. It mays to have a political environment where there is at least a chance for another party to get into power, even if it's not one we personally would like to. It keeps parties 'honest' (well as honest as they're ever likely to get!).

Not your fault, but this has absolutely nothing to do with the refugee problem.
But we now have a small group of whining Remainers on here trying desperately to down talk Brexit and spread fear, which is all they have ever done.

Perhaps they could start a new thread, so they can all get together and whine at each other while the rest of us can get on with the now, rather than trying to fight battles that have already been lost.

It will be interesting to see what remains, I guess we will have to rename it Little England.

Very little of that would be English, the NHS will hopefully hold out.

The rest all foreign owned, private equity companies etc. the forth-coming tory sell-offs will actually leave very few assets left to strip.

Run for the benefit of a tiny portion of the super-rich.

Was just a thought on HKOwen's comments about Scotland potentially leaving the union really (rather than the merits or otherwise of Brexit - as I tend not to talk about that since it's a done deal). No worries .

If Ireland is ever reunified it will be under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, 50%+1, nothing to do with Brexit. There is no other scenario currently agreed.

If Scotland goes then the rest of the UK will benefit from a flight of capital and people from Scotland.

It's academic most likely as even the most Braveheart Scot is surely not so stupid as to vote for a country that likely will not be viable economically.

Putting all else aside the currency problems are too big, especially around pensions.

More money for Wales and NI.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

So the vast majority of the super rich will not benefit from this view of the future.

But Brexit is very influential on the refugee problem. We have lost our voice in the EU and we are therefore unable to change future policies there.

In relation to international organised crime, which is what fuels most of the people trafficking across the channel, our exit from Europol which was not even necessary post-Brexit has robbed us of valuable intelligence. It’s quite possible that the criminals presently have better cross border cooperation and coordination than the UK has.

There is no need to talk down Brexit it does all its own work in that direction. We are all waiting for a single benefit to be identified, nothing is forthcoming yet.

It's amazing how many things which never happened before Brexit are nothing to do with Brexit.

For what it's worth, I think a re-unification of Ireland is a long way off - there isn't a huge appetite for it in the north nor the south as it stands.

I dont think RoI really want to take on the issues of NI and so unification won't happen.

Speaking to Scots, Independence is seeming more likely. However, they can no longer rely on the price of oil and the EU would be unlikely to take them as it would risk the political relationship with the rest of the UK.

The SNP have got a good thing going in Scotland, every time they f*** up, they blame the Union. People haven't yet cottoned on to the fact they are just a bunch of small minded xenophobes that will say anything to get independence no matter the cost.

I see your parallel world remains intact. There are no "whining Remainers" in the real world, either here or anywhere else. There are some hard-nosed, pragmatic realists who see things as they are, and not how they dream they might have been, if only.

The battle over the ridiculous event known as Brexit is indeed lost, and no-one is still fighting that. The war though is far from over.

With the predicted consequences now becoming the realities that are hurting everyone, it's only a question of time before the discontent turns to blame. Deflecting some of that onto the pandemic will delay the blame overwhelming the government, but not for ever. How it will resolve itself remains a mystery. Whether the Tories will move again towards the middle, whether Labour will re-invent itself again, or whether a reborn Liberal Democrat centralist party will strengthen are all possibilities.

This may well have no direct connection to why the French are not doing more to turn back the tide of undocumented migrants, but there is a link. If we can solve this problem, one of the primary reasons for Brexit will be seen as having been accomplished. Should we not, and all the signs are that we won't, then people will begin to realise that little or nothing has been gained, whilst a lot has been lost.

New battles are now joined.

They still don't understand what they voted for. It's still 'Project Fear' despite most the warnings coming true.

They voted to protect our borders. Now illegal immigration is far bigger a problem then it's ever been because France have no interest in cooperating and we can't get the legal migration we need to fill crucial jobs because we've made it too difficult and/or put people off coming here with our close minded rhetoric.

You are still going with the " voters were too thick to understand the issues " line.

Patronising in the extreme
