As someone who was only old enough to start supporting Palace in the early 90's, I love seeing what it was like way back when, so keep 'em coming! I was in the Holmesdale on it's last day as a terrace, which sadly I think is the only terrace I've ever been on and I can't remember it much as I was only 7!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me. Basically i would like to find old photos on the stadium. I've read the articles about the ground on here and the club website as well as the usual suspects like wikipedia and google, but i would like to see pictures of the stands and stadium during the stages of them being built and even before. I have spent many hours trolling through the internet looking for pictures or even videos of it, and can only find the odd one or two of one stand here or there but nothing taken during the construction, even the Holmesdale end and that was early 90's. I have the CPFC history book that has the newspaper clippings through history and again nothing much. Now i know Selhurst isn't the best of grounds and the Holmesdale was basically a slope but being 20 i dont have too much knowledge of the club before the turn of the millennium. Any help would be much appreciated. Also i've used the search function on HOL to see if this has come up before but couldn't see anything Thanks in advanced, EagleDavy
Here's a clip from that site of work being done on Selhurst pre season 1969-70. [Link]

July 1936. See the very small terrace in the Whitehorse Road End and no houses yet built on the road outside - only at the top of the hill. Edited by Eddie Moliano (18 Apr 2010 5:12pm) Attachment: selhurst.jpg (50.87Kb)

I got this one. Read the caption at the bottom for details
The Main Stand hasn't changed much...
I don't think so. I always thought it was an Archibald Leitch design, he of Goodison and Ibrox amongst others. In the seminal book 'The football grounds of england and wales' by Simon Inglis (1985) he writes: Palace commissioned Archibald Leitch to build the new ground....The official opening on 30th August 1924 took place in a still unfinished main stand. The contractors at SP were Humphreys of Knightsbridge, a firm which built among other grounds, the Valley. Leitch's main stand was was virtually identical to his designs 20 years before at Fulham, Huddersfield and Stamford Bridge, but without the triangular roof gable..'

Edited by richard shaw (og)65 (08 Apr 2010 10:42am) Don't...I used to sew those (amonst others) on my jean jacket. I thought I was really cool To the guy asking about 'the last stand'., about 10 years ago a mate of mine saw a big photo of it ina football memorabilia shop near the lake district, it was about £150 then. He didn't get me one
If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all! |
