I have just found this whilst "surfing" through Gold Talk. I was 18 years old and went to the game with my best mate Steve and our Geography teacher, Terry Moyle. Like a number of the others, we still had our tickets from the postponed game in Feb, when I think the pitch had been waterlogged. We got to Selhurst at about 5.30pm, cos we had heard rumours that it was going to be rammed. The atmosphere was ELECTRIC - that's the only word that fits. We managed to squirm down to about 2/3rds of the way down the Holmesdale, just to the left of the goal as you look at it. 27 years have made my memories of the game pretty fuzzy. Clearly Palace were going all out from the start for the win as we wanted to go up as Champions. But Burnley were stubborn and held out until the second half. Eventually we broke them down and won 2-0 with goals from Swindle and Walshy. At the final whistle, pandemonium broke out and thousands flooded onto the pitch ( including me and my mate). The fans chanted for the team to come out and eventually they did to the loudest cheer I have ever heard at Selhurst in 35 years. It took ages to get back home - about midnight in the end, but we stayed up for several hours drinking beers to celebrate a great night and promotion to the elite. The next day was the famous "5 minute" cup final between Man Ure and Arse, so it was quite a special footballing weekend. Nice trip down memory lane.

i was about 12,friday night if i remember right.pay at the turnstile in those days.we queud for ages at the whitehorse end to get in,there were so many people there as a kid you could'nt take it all in,as the game started they opened the big metal gates(usually to let you out or to let the police in)to let the kids in,well as you can imagine every one poured in.after the match we still had our entrance money, this was duly wasted on bottles of cherryade(corona)rose tinted glasses, you betche.Happy memouries of a great night.UP THE PALACE.

I had just returned from Japan -- newly married and living in a flat beside Selhurst Station. It took all week to convince my new wife that she "had to go." I don't think she realised what she was letting herself in for when she relented. She's only 5'6" so being submerged in the mass of humanity that was inside Selhurst that night must have been pretty intimidating for her. We were just below the floodlights in the Whitehorse, closer to complete strangers, than would normally be acceptable in polite company. The atmosphere was electric. I know that sounds a bit of a cliche. But it was so special to be there that night. My wife mised the Walsh goal because of the sheer number of "giants" blocking her view but for the second I had gotten her up on to my shoulders -- so she had a magic view for Swindle's strike. It was one of those nights where you just stand there afterwards and take it all in. The excitement, the passion, the feeling of being in the middle of something special. I think it was the day I found real understanding of the famous Shankly quote about football being more important than life and death. Just for a few hours it felt like it. I've had many great Palace moments. But the Burnley game is by far the best. I had been in bigger crowds at Hampden and Wembley. But this was something else. This was my team. Selhurst magic!

What a night that was..... I was working in Penge at the time and at 5.15 when I finished I walked around the corner to try and get a bus from outside the Goldsmiths pub to the ground... there was so much traffic even at that time that nothing was moving - so I started walking, and walking.... until I got to the Norwood clocktower (no bus had passed me.) I made a phone call to my mate who was in Waddon and told him to get a train and get his arse to the ground asap. I had already bought a bottle of Moet and made my way to the ground and smuggled it in with me. I went to the AW enclosure and once in was unable to get out..... it was impossible to move.. The game itself went by in a blur and I have little recollection of it until Vince Hillaire sent over a cross from the AW side and Ian Walsh was there to send a bullet header into the net.... the ground erupted and went wild, I went flying and was trying to get my bag open to open the Moet..... when things settled down I did pop the bottle.... and was passing it around to fellow supporters.... just as I got it back someone said to me "you had better hang onto that.... we gonna get another here"...... we did.... again the place went wild..... somehow I managed to keep hold of the bottle.... and then we finished it off.... it was warm, flat.... but tasted beautiful...... After that I and thousands of others made our way down to the front...waiting for the whistle..... and promotion to the top flight going up as champions over the weed.

I had just turned 16. Should have paid the full price got challenged by a copper to give my birth date and completely mucked it up but he just smiled. I met my Dad outside the ground quite early and remembered what Jim Cannon had said the previous week on TV. Something along the lines of: "I imagine that all those fans who couldn't quite make it all season will manage to be there Friday night". Boy was he right. It was mobbed.
I'm a sleeping dog, but you can't tell |

My memories of that night are that I only just about got in to the Holmesdale before they closed the gates. There was no question of getting on to the actual terraces and I managed to get half a a view standing on the mud bank that was at the top of the Holmesdale in those days. I could see that thousands had been locked out and were crowded on the incline going up to where the gift shop is now. They could get a view of one goal from there so had some idea of what was going on.

Ashamed to say I was busy being born so I didn't get to go, and that is the first clip I have ever seen of this legendary match. I bet the atmosphere was amazing that day. Is there ANY chance of finding the other goal footage Staffie?
