I heard something on the PM programme earlier that was inserted as a consequence of this event. It surprised me a lot, and seems to be based on this:-

Violent crime has declined by 90% in 30 years. Not the reported violent crime, but the actual violent crime.

The exception being knife crime which has increased, although it fell last year.

It was pointed out though that compared to other countries like the USA the fatalities from knives here, compared to guns in the USA, is tiny. From memory there were 40,000 deaths from guns in the USA last year whilst there were only 300 here and another 133 from knives.

This is no reason to be complacent but it does put it in context and show that common perceptions, stirred up by certain media outlets, is not always correct.

Getting in early for some attempted point scoring I see, even before any real details have been released. No concern for anything other than your ideology and agenda.

Anyone jumping straight in who is more concerned with the race of the attacker, whether that’s the left or the right, needs their head wobbled.

I have lived in Southport now for over 3 years and have got to know the town and area well. It’s a pleasant seaside town where people come on holiday. It’s certainly not an inner city region or even near one, as although it is within the Merseyside area it is some 20 miles north of Liverpool city centre. The road where this atrocity occurred is in a quiet residential area and the building is down a small entrance and holds daily music and dance classes for young children, most of whom are accompanied by their parents. It is so far removed from where you would expect any kind of trouble, let alone such horror.

I am so horrified, upset and angered that this has happened and sick of hearing platitudes from politicians who collectively over decades have failed to take action to eliminate or even reduce such crimes. Indeed, their policies have led us to this point and I really fear for the future of this country

Is that true, or just a perception?

I thought knife crime was predominately involving rival drug gangs. Not grooming gangs.
