And here's a somewhat esoteric one, but if at least one person gets it, then my life's work will be complete. At the time of the Open golf championship, every pundit, reporter etc refers to "the claret jug" but the inflection they adopt suggests a jug that is claret-coloured ie they put too much emphasis on the word "claret". The correct inflection should suggest a jug that's used to hold and pour claret. This is achieved by emphasising neither word, or perhaps emphasising "jug" slightly more than "claret". Try it and you'll see that I'm right!

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Many years ago there was a gentleman advanced in years who used to say with some regularity "It won't always be dark at seven".

You made that up. Total and utter hogwash, there is not a scintilla of truth in your accusation.Suffice to say you suffer from the material disadvantage of being wrong. The aged gentleman in question was from "Oop North" with a stentorian voice and these incidents occurred in the 70s. Edited by Willo (14 Jul 2024 9.10am)
