I think the moaning minnies are missing the point - Croatia didn't have a sniff for 30 min, Walker should have put us two up, and we kept possession in a highly skilful and composed manner - they're a decent side, beat Sweden 3-0 away previous game - they were bound to have a go second half and our defence kept them at arm's length pretty well. It was an efficient performance, we defended and tried to do them on the break and went very close twice. Good, professional performance - great result and good lessons for Southgate - why didn't Foden ONCE go on Trippier's outside for the entire game, how about an overlap and a cross like Saka did? Foden for England reminds me of Zaha for England, when the team is set up for his possession he's fine, when he has to go to the best position off the ball and know when and where to make himself available he gets lost.

This seems to be one of the issues - no width on the left. I would expect that firstly, Trippier not being left footed should mean he plays as an inverted wing back - yet he seemed right out wide so was a wing back in the system. This negated anything from him - he kept on passing backwards and inside. This was likely the plan as I presume Foden is playing Inside Forward so would be coming inside and into the edge of the box rather than staying wide. Just my presumption on the actual instructions from what it looked like - and usually looks like. Trippier would need to run down the wing but would likely have to cut back to deliver across. Quite difficult skills for a right back playing left back. I don't think the players are to blame - it's the tactical instructions that just don't suit them. Compare that to the other side of the pitch where Walker could play down the line and Saka stayed wide - that seemed to work for quite a bit of the match until Saka looked tired. I think he came back from injury recently enough.

easy mistake to make from this distance - you don't want to make it when you're over there - Serbia normally wear blue you see.
