Agreed. He was caught on the ball several times and seemed totally at a loss about his position or the pace of the game (at least Denmark's pace - perhaps he was trying to fit in with England's pedestrian tortoise pace). He won't be first choice after that. If Southgate wants to freshen it up then Wharton and Gordon are yet to be tainted by the dismal performances we have seen.

I have said before that Eze is great with Olise. I am more convinced than ever that if he leaves then the Eze we saw last night for England will be what people see. He seems to have found a place at palace and for his sake I would stay. He flourished under Roy and again under OG but was not great under PV.

As for England… I was screaming for Wharton. But possibly under Roy Southgate it could ruin him. But as it’s our country… stick him in and watch the team suddenly find rhythm and class.

Wharton got 10 minutes in one of our pre tournament friendlies. He was superb. 100% pass accuracy. Really noticed by everyone.
What does Southgate do? Nothing. We haven't even heard about him again.
Managers moods in interviews always seems to translate into team performance.
Look at Glasner, Guardiola, Klopp and then Roy and Southgate. Chalk and cheese.
Southgate has become a nervous wreck. In interview, he has developed a forehead twitch. He is nervous, unsure and muddled. He talks as though he is trying to convince the world he knows what he is doing. Hasn't got a clue. Never has had.
He has got a great bunch of players who he simply cannot mould because he doesn't know how to.

Too true. Thank god we didn’t get him as our manager

Eze didn’t do himself any favours for last 15 mins. He looks lost and half asleep. I appreciate he didn’t get many passes or chances but you look at him and he seems blaaaaaah. Gordon will now get the nod.

Yes, Eze looked like little boy lost but then he's not a wide player. He performs best as a no 10 and England have enough of those. Southgate has to play Gordon out wide - the only natural left winger (to use that increasingly old-fashioned term) in the squad.

Didn't he come on around 60 minutes? Weird to hear Southgate saying he has no natural replacement for Philips when he has Wharton on the bench. Last night was weird as England's biggest problem was they couldn't get control of the midfield but then he brings on Gallagher who is a box-to-box high-energy player, not someone you bring on to get control of a game. It didn't help that Rice was really poor. Guehi was up there for MotM, although that was perhaps supported by how awful everyone else was, especially the more senior players like Walker and Kane. Foden showed that when he comes into the middle he's a big threat. The problem was he was supposed to be on the left so England lacked balance. Eze came on and did the same, constantly trying to come inside. I really want Eze to play but surely Gordon is the more natural choice in this system?

I'm beginning to think I don't want to see our players ruined by forcing them into this Hodgsonesque nightmare of an England team and 'strategy'.

Of course, I still want England to win the thing, but increasingly I just want our guys to come back uninjured.

Through my red and blue specs, the answer to CM is obvious.

I suspect because of the age and limited experience GS really does not want to throw the kids in. Hence the TAA experiment. If you've got the ability you have the ability.

Unfortunately for England, Connor is the safer option. He'll add some energy, but he isnt technically good enough to play the role effectively.

I do wonder that as well. He really needs someone to play off. He (as do all attackers) benifit from getting the ball early. Every time he got hte ball last night it was at a standstill and he was expected to start from nothing.

Its why Foden is struggling, he need a fluid and dynamic system to operate in.

The only upside I can see is they should be overjoyed to come back and be playing under Glasner, a proper manager, that's if they stay of course.

I think the Southgate and Hodgson comparisons are appropriate.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

As a Scotland fan I hesitate to intrude on private grief, especially after the Germany game, but I can’t see England winning this tournament. They should still top the group and be good enough to beat Poland but if they come up against Germany or Spain I don’t fancy their chances. Southgate’s squad selection was all wrong. There’s no balance in the team. Too many number 10s and he’s too conservative to play Wharton alongside Rice. Alexander-Arnold isn’t savvy enough to play in midfield, and selecting an injured left back with no cover was criminal.

Thanks P64 some good comments. By the way the manager of the hotel where Scotland is staying has asked if the team can vacate their rooms by noon Monday seeing as how they wont be needing them.

To the Scot’s there’s no such thing as a knockout stage, it’s just called July…….the old ones are the best
