I loved Punchy, he was hit and miss but i will never forget his goal against Norwich, what it meant to him. Apart from that . . .
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Punch was a great and cheap (free?) signing who gave us some incredible memories and seemed to also be a fan. To put him among the worst is both absurd and despicable. Definitely one whose goals and contributions positively affected the history of the club. I suspect nobody was more disappointed than him at the form in which his career with us ended. But then again he had a long period under Pardew so that would ruin many a good footballer. Punch cost about £1m when we made his loan permanent. I see his career in 3 parts. First 2 to 3 years really good, scored some important goals and was a key player. The next couple of years he drifted further back and had less impact on games. Roy saw this and dropped him for Luka quite quickly and suddenly we looked more of a team. Finally the late ACL injury v Man City kept him out for a year and he was never the same player afterwards. So 2 good years, 2 average years and 2 years where he didn't feature. If Ward had stayed on his man (Mata) he may have scored the winner in the cup final for us.

Benteke, i hated the ignorant, self important, lazy, talentless, waste of space, arrogant oaf. Pretty much sums him up for me as well, but I’ll add waste of money to your list, we must have paid that charlatan knocking on £36 million in wages in his time with us

The best 5 are probably about right. I'd argue you could chuck Cabaye in. It was the first time of this era the club bought a Champions League level player, a real coup at the time, and he made us a lot better to watch - particularly around that era where we beat Arsenal 3-0. Andersen probably isn't far behind either. Not so sure about the worst 5. Sakho wasn't great in hindsight but the fans signed him as much as the club did. Everyone was baying for that to take place after how good the loan spell was. I'd argue the loan spell could be in our top 5 transfers as it kept us in the league. Wickham was just unfortunate. He was doing alright until the injury and probably would have had a good career with us. Sometimes injuries happen. The club's got a good record on signings. You can point back to some horrors during the first promotion summer including Kebe, Marange, Fryers, Hunt etc. but none were particularly expensive. Of the current crop Ahamada and Franca are possible risks to enter that list purely because their fee was fairly high but time is on their side. Ahamada looks like a great signing, but too early to know if he's really as good as his expensive signing suggests Franca that is Edited by PJEagle (30 May 2024 7.17pm)

Benteke...Jonathan. (2016-17) Just to keep his big brother on the books? Who will know? Before Gegenpressing came the Belgian tactic of nepotism

It's the price of doing business I'm afraid.

Good points, we would’ve been buggered without his goals that first season and any striker would have struggled with Roy’s tactics, even though he did miss a lot of chances as well. But I think it was the arrogance and the laziness after that first season when things weren’t going his way that did him no favours and what are my main issues with him.

I think the fact people can't even remember Loic (go sick) Remy is a good combat indicator of his uselessness. Pardew's transfer business nearly ruined us. There is a school of thought to say we are only just recovered from it. I would like to see the managers we have had since promo rated on their transfer business. For me, bottom would be Olly - but it is arguable Pardew was much worse. Big Sam was terrific in transfers. Pulis too.

Can't have this thread without mentioning Wright and Bright. Bright: Wright: There is so much to say about each of them but perhaps the most interesting is comparing what we witnessed with our exciting forward line just recently to what Wrighty and Brighty did for us back in the late eighties.
