6 regulars are out tonight so my prediction is that all 4 Palace players will have some part in the game and do well.

And then Southgate will drop most of them and take some one who is injured or out of form.

Grealish and Maddison should not be going for starters.

This with bells on.

Never happen. Media pressure and lucrative sports sponsorship will always favour top 6 players.

Btw, think we'll win this one. It will go the way it always goes. Unconvincing opening win v Serbia. Too hard 0-0 draw v Denmark. The media will then be all over the team, much wailing and gnashing of teeth and this message board will be in full Southgate bashing. Then we will beat Slovenia and our next oppo like a knife through butter...

And we will "somehow" reach the QF having barely left 3rd gear, without injury, fatigue or yellow card.

Nice to meet the French. We owe them one.

I almost missed this crouton amidst the word soup. So you are saying that England will win Euro 2024 are you? Well I had a quick glance at the betting odds and England has the shortest odds. However England's odds are always shorter than form or expectation would otherwise determine, because of the sheer weight of money that gets placed on them (dare I say by mug punters on the way home from the pub!).

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

I saw the injury news this morning too. Assume Guehi will start, and with no Bellingham, Foden, Saka and Gordon get chance for Eze. You feel like he needs to WOW to stand a chance of getting on the plane.

Mainoo not with the squad either, so more chance for Wharton.

Who's better - Wharton or Mainoo? I really don't have it as close.
Who's going to get picked?
What's better - a natural left back, or putting a right back at left back? What is Southgate going to do?
Add in up front only Kane ever produces the goods. Plus a dodgy defence - what do you get? I think we all already know.
Don't get your hopes up and shut your ears to 'it's coming home'.
Don't worry, I'm just the same - I'll get that false hope too.
I stopped watching international football for years and felt much better for it. Recent tournaments dragged me back in. Damn it.

SSN are saying that Guehi & Dunk will be CB's because Stones has only recently joined up with the squad & Maguire is still injured, nice incentive for them.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

It certainly is close - Wharton has obviously been a revelation for us, but the same is clearly true of Mainoo.

I'm in the same boat.

Perhaps harsh however whilst I think England on paper are more than capable of winning this tournament, I just don't see us as overcoming our cultural, psychological inability to do so.

They'll be looking crestfallen and bewildered once more as the opponents put in the final nail on a counter after we've dominated the ball but have failed to find the goal to get us back on level terms, probably in the semis.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I never understand a lot of football fans mentality when it comes to the national team - we seem to exist in this bubble where everything bar winning a tournament is considered total failure, and then we wonder why there's a perpetual feeling of underachieving.

At club level, everyone recognises that success is very much relative and that knockout tournaments are notoriously difficult to win - see Man City in the Champions League - but apparently at international level success is not relative, we should win every tournament, and if we don't it's a result of major incompetency or underperformance.

World Cup 2018 - lost a semi-final after extra time.

Euro 2020 - lost the final on penalties.

World Cup 2022 - We missed a penalty and narrowly lost to the best team in the world.

If we just approached these tournaments as we might at club level; recognising that yes we are one of the top 2-3 teams in the tournament but also that there are other very strong teams, and accepting that knockout football is notoriously unpredictable and determined by fine margins, I think people would enjoy it a hell of a lot more.

I watched Mainoo a couple of times and thought he was ok - nothing special. More hyped due to being Utd. He looked lost playing for England but the whole team looked unconvincing and uncomfortable anyway - so I don't blame him for that. I just don't think he's that good. However, I didn't watch the cup final - heard Utd were good in that.

I don't know enough about Mainoo what I would say about Wharton is that he seems to be the glue that holds the team together allowing the flair players to struct their stuff and protecting the defenders . If he can do that for England....

Just objectively untrue - he won man of the match in his full debut against Belgium and every report you can find agreed with how impressive he was. Highlights here;

This is another observation on the national team; fans generally love accusing the manager and selectors of being biased, while generally displaying far more bias in their assessments of players than the management do.

Imagine Wharton had just scored the winner in the FA cup final after an incredible breakthrough season - would any of us entertain a notion that he's just ok and overhyped? I highly doubt it.

Agree with this - Wharton's profile is what gives him the best chance of making the squad... he offers something we don't really have elsewhere and would free up Rice to get around the pitch more, which I think could tempt Southgate.

I don't want to at all downplay how highly I rate Wharton - I think he's an incredible talent, but so is Mainoo.
